This was such a powerful and moving poem that cut me to the heart. How terrible war is... and this piece describes its horrors and devastation so vividly. For me, one of the most powerful parts was where it said:

Angel's weep, though we can't hear that sound

Teddy bears lie in the broken streets

It almost brought me to tears. This was an excellent and touching piece.

There is some very powerful imagery at play here that made me think of Gaza, although you don't refer to any specific place. This is stark and emotive, reminding us how very lucky we are to live in places where we're safe.

Gaza was actually my inspiration for this piece! The photo was taken by Motaz Azaiza (a reporter from Gaza) who I have been following since these events started.

Your very well-written poem really portrays the horrors of war and desperation. Your depiction of war and its horrors accurately describe what people live through. I wish you had added a location to your notes, but then maybe you are writing universally. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for the amazing comment! I wrote this based on the events happening in Gaza right now, but it could be applied to many different wars. The picture I used was taken by Motaz Azaiza (a reporter in Gaza) and was named by the Times as one of the top ten photos of 2023!
