What a truly beautiful love poem! And for once, a contest winner that knocks my socks off! Plus, I'm a monarch and milkweed enthusiast, thrilled every New York August to find beautiful caterpillars, chrysalles (didn't look up the plural), and imagos in that heart-grabbing pattern of red, orange, black, and white. But that's off topic. This poem has not one banal line, and works its way to its moving conclusion about imperfect outcomes and love - well, I can't find an adequate adverb meaning "by a whole bunch."

This is truly excellent. I am out of 6's, but I see your awesome first place award may make up for that. Great lines: I feel it in my chest every time you leave me,
drawing me along in your wake,
a fish hooked on spinner by an absent angler.
Very nice share.
The only suggestion I would say is that the last two lines seem to be in a dark gray font color rather than black like the rest of the font.

Thank you very much for reading and reviewing. I appreciate your kind words and that you took the time. I?ll try to fix the font issue. For some reason it looks fine to me, but I appreciate having it pointed out! Thank you, and I hope you have a wonderful week.

Yeah, it's not a big issue. I have to look at grays and blacks all the time with my posts, too.

HI K,
This is a wonderfully written free verse that tells what love is using a lot of imaginative metaphors. Although I am not a fisherman, I like the fishing metaphor. It shows how much the speaker loves the other because she is willing to stay friends until the other is ready. But, maybe, she should let the other know because he/she may feel the same and be afraid to say it.
Congrats on winning the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Enjoy your weekend.

Joan

Oh, your second stanza is so beautiful. This whole poem is exceptional, painting metaphors with the skill of a master. You express deep wisdom, longing and affection, the very things that grow Love. Beautiful!

Ohh, the agony of unrequited love! As a gardener, I absolutely love your metaphors of plants, and nature, and heavenly bodies.
Those last two stanzas are powerful...the longing!! Very well done!

I enjoyed your poem for the contest and agree with your analysis here of love and how to define it. Love is something that slowly grips us inside and we cannot let it go, a fine post for the contest, love Dolly x
