Didn't they consummate their marriage before? I thought they were considering that they might have children. The phrase "did what she knew to receive Ben's seed" makes it sound like it was their first time. But they have been awfully busy so I guess it could be a first time.
A touching scene but I'm thinking that Ben will rally. You're just playing with the readers...

    Thank you for your review.
They practiced the rhythm method of birth control. In this instance, Beth knew that she would conceive.

This is ssoooooo depressing. I know that you can't kill him off, but even so, with 49 more chapters to go, how many times can you put him in peril before we(the readers) despair of his Job like suffering. It is difficult to continue to read about Ben the human pin cushion.I like you Wayne, but really. Karen

in the 80 chapters (so far), Ben has been the hero in most of them. Though I have had him beaten, shanghaied, whipped, shot (twice) imprisoned... well yeah. But hang on for at least one more chapter.
Oh, and thank you for your review. (smiley face here)

This was a sweet chapter, Wayne, of some of the highlights of Ben's calling as he lies at death's door wondering whatever happened to those folk he helped save. And I think Beth gave him something to live for since she may now be carrying his child. I have a feeling he's going to pull through. You've built this up well. - Jim

Beth wanted Ben to work a miracle on himself; ah, we know only God can work miracles. Still, we hope for anything and everything when our loved ones are in need.

Although some may be offended by the sex with a dyeing man scene, I thought it an act of love because she wants to have a "piece of him in the future" and because sex is an act of love in marriage.

One more chapter? Well, I can see this, but please let us know what will happen to Beth in the future.

I just deleted words that... and then deleted more that would have done the same in answer to your question.
Thank you for your very kind review.

Aha. I felt the end was nigh. Told yer! The moment in bed was sensitive and beautiful. Just lovely idea. Tear-jerking. Have a six for the whole series. I can't imagine you'll top this chapter though.

Oh, yes please, at least one more chapter! We have loose ends to tie up here - and hopefully new chapters beyond that, although whether with the same protagonists or not is up to God ... :)

That is certainly leaving at a cliffhanger. Is Ben going to talk himself back into living, or is it finally time for him to go? He came back once so I am certain God could bring him back again.

A most unexpected story of their love being fulfilled before his death, but they both seem to know his death is coming very soon, and are maximising their time. Beth will be able to carry on if she has Ben's child to love and raise. Well done!

Thank you. Your take is highly valued. And since you didn't say anything negative about the conceiving... I guess I did okay. (smiley face here)

You did well. We all know how it happens and don?t need to be told in explicit detail. lol.

You're keeping us in suspense. Is Ben dying or is he going to be healed? Surely God didn't send him to that town to die but why is lingering so long without dying.

Should "vigilance" be vigilante committee?

If Ben took a fatal slug, how can he heal, talk, or anything else? Wouldn't a fatal slug have killed him?

"as ben would take" should be as Ben would take.

Vigilance is how San Franciscans called it in the late 1800s.
Maybe a better word for 'fatal, but Alexander Hamilton took 2 weeks to die after shot by Burr. He was lucid for much of it. Frank H. Reid (killer of Soapy Smith) took 12 days.
Thank you for the cap catch. My cap finger needs fired. I'm always going back to cap stuff.
Thank you for the very fine review.
