Yes, it is a challenge - all year 'round I think, not just this time of year. It isn't anything new though - there have always been bad people, the modern world just gives them different ways of doing what they've always done. Steal.

Thank you for this helpful information. I'm one of those people who make end-of-year contributions. However, I initiate the call to my chosen organizations. I was almost scammed once, so I'm extra cautious. You have provided great advice. There are new scams every day.

Scammers suck! I'm as tired as you are with these lower then scum life breathing butt faced corpses.
I've recently received 5-6 emails from the IRS that I'm entitled to a $976 tax return (not a tax refund; it said tax return). Stupid MFR's...
These emails go direct to trash!
My in-laws years ago lived in retirement village and were scammed $1400 to have there house repainted. There house was aluminum sided. My wife was livid!
Again, I'm right there with you!

I liked reading this. It was informative. You did a good job covering several elements of scams and scammers. The 'urgent' quality is definitely one of the ones that can make it seem like an emergency, but it is just high-end pressure. What is really frustrating are the look-alikes. I don't mind the little gifts and address labels from genuine charities, but I appreciate hearing how winning a prize cannot be part of a spiel.
Only suggestion: Blatant instead of blatent in the second to last sentence/exclamation.

It is really scary how clever scammers are getting in impersonating people. I can see how some people may think sometimes that these are genuine people. A well written, informative piece. You're right, this time of year we do have to be extra careful.

Great warning to all those so easily taken in. They can also go to charitywater.com (I have not used this one) or charity navigator, which I check with at least twice year. The second one determines how much money is actually going to the cause and rating them.

Great warning and brilliant informative post. This is a very important message. On my phone I get ten or so scam emails a day. Apparently there are parcels waiting for me, my computer is at risk and my subscriptions have ended for things I haven't subscribed to. So tiresome!
