I believe you are right. Once romance enters the picture I don't think the friendship can exist. I do believe you can be friends with your lover. I think that is one of the joys of love. This was heartbreaking. Gretchen

This poem begs to ask the question, 'Can men and women be friends?'. I say yes, they can, but, and this is important, I don't think they can be friends if at one time they were lovers. That will never work. I have many male friends, but we were never lovers and will never be. Your presentation is, again, outstanding.

That is a good question. I think once a couple have been lovers, it would be really hard to become just friends. But I suppose it happens as long as both parties are no longer wishing to be a couple again like the narrator here.

I agree. Lovers can't be friends after the end of the relationship. Or friends when one is in love... it doesn't work.

It's as though you're reading my mind. I had this same experience after the most significant relationship of my life ended. I would say we continued to be friendly, not friends, and we continued to work together for some years until he remarried and moved away. Over twenty years later, it's still a raw wound.

Yes they can be friends, but not if you've got romantic notions, or even sexual desires. We've remained friends with a couple of ladies that were married ladies, long after their husbands have been deceased. But when you're young? Definitely not common. Beautifully written Gypsy, blessings Roy
