So glad that Ben didn't believe Soapy and was able to make him skitter away. But Billy seems like a trustworthy man and even gave Ben a job that he can do and pay off the lumber. That Beth is a gem! Ben could not have asked for a better partner in his calling!

Unfortunately, every town and settlement has its Soapy. How much more ferocious mjust this sort of behaviour been in a frontier town where men are men and the law is precarious. Thanks for the share. :)

This is another intersting story. The Soapy you mention was born in Georgia not so far from me. Chattanooga sits at the edge of Georgia. I wonder why a southern boy would choose to live in Alaska. I remember Skagway from my Alaska cruise. I love the song from Johnny Horton. I never knew what he looked like until, He had good voice and died way too young.

This is another intersting story. The Soapy you mention was born in Georgia not so far from me. Chattanooga sits at the edge of Georgia. I wonder why a southern boy would choose to live in Alaska. Thank you. I didn't know that about Soapy. If I'd known of his Creede connection I would have made him a long-term antagonist in the book.

Soapy Smith is all over Alaska now as some kind of hero crook. Ben must have known through his calling that Soapy was a liar. If he did all the things you say in this story, he earned his notoriety. I'm glad Ben isn't robbed by him.

When we were in Fairbanks the bar across from our hotel was called Soapy Smith's Watering Hole. I spent some time in Creede and don't remember that name from there so I could not have helped you.

I'm afraid, I've missed some of your posts somehow but lovely to catch up on Ben's progress/married life. I know I shouldn't but I can't help but like Soapy Smith. His name is wonderful and his scams are smart albeit very mean. I think he's due a lesson or two. Ben, as ever, maintains his discipline and doesn't rise to the bait. And now he's got himself a job so things definitely looking up and his prison experience hasn't unduly disadvantaged him. No errors noted here and another excellent (as ever) chapter. Well done, Wayne! Debbie

Soapy -a slippery character with plenty of money-making schemes. If he owns the bordello then it won't be their last interaction. Ben is always prepared for plenty of hard work to support his calling, and his wife. A fine chapter.

I was really surprised to learn that Soapy got his infamous start in Creede, where Ben was over 70 chapters ago. Almost made me do a rewrite to have a long term antagonist.

This was a wonderfully interesting chapter, Wayne. So much research you have done! Even tidbits like, getting your windows and stoves first because the window sizes and flu pipe thicknesses can be variable. Wherever did you learn that? The character of Soapy Smith was also an interesting addition to the story. I read more about him, and he was quite the con artist. I liked the way Ben refused to be conned by him.
I also admired Ben's modesty about saving the ship from exploding and how he wouldn't let it affect the deal he'd made for his passage. I enjoyed this chapter very much. - Jim

I wish I'd known about Soapy having history in Creede early on. He would have made a good long term antagonist.
I learned about windows when I built a sun room on a house. I'd built two houses myself, but the commercial plans had standardized dimensions.

Yeah, that would have been such a natural to have worked Soapy into the story.
