Interesting and informative article. I have never followed this cartoon. The subject, Zits, makes for all kinds of possibilities. Borgman seemed to find his career path early on, and was fortunate to find immediate opportunities for his cartoon work. Winning a Pulitzer is certainly a great honor. I don't always agree with the choices, but Borgman sounds worthy. He's certainly been around awhile. I remember the stories about Ryan White. Strange we don't hear much about AIDS these days, but at that time it was a notorious killer. judi

Of course, as being a Cincinnati resident for a while now, and growing up within 80 miles from there, everything to speak of is a lingering memory. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting to hear how all these comic strips and characters began, and the skill of their creators in making them famous for their relevance to both different elements of society and the world of social commentary.

I don't remember the Zits cartoon. I love well done political cartoons and have gone to hear a local political cartoonist make a talke and illustrate how he does cartoons and goes about getting his ideas. I found this interesting. I'll look and see if I find Zits on Google.

Dear Brett, I have no more sixes to award, but this is certainly worth the top mark! I think that for good English, logical explanation and a real economy of expression this is your best ever.
It flows like water, is always relevant and connected, and it easily held my attention throughout. Starting with a helpful intro. to 'Zits', this is a great bio. of Jim Borgman, with a useful set of notes on his achievements.
Most of us would like a Pulitzer!
Best wishes from Paul

This is a very interesting article on an excellent cartoonist. I remember the Maplethorpe controversy, but not what Borgman did about it. He is certainly a special artist to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The stars had aligned was his summation for winning the Pulitzer Prize. That's a good way of looking at it. I thought he was in the zone as he put it as well as talented beyond compare. Zits was never a cartoon I read but now I think I will look up some of his political cartoons. I always wanted to draw political cartoons but sadly I can't draw worth beans.
Thanks for sharing about his success.

It's interesting to see how one cartoon can change history: "One extremely special cartoon Borgman drew epitomized his feelings for the Cincinnati Bengals NFL Football team's mascot. Borgman drew the tiger sitting dominantly on the playing field. He called the cartoon "Next". It became a symbol of their 1989 Super Bowl run. A game they lost 20 to 16 to the San Francisco 49'ers.". Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

I remember the cartoon series 'Zits' and the sheer title of its heading described everything that the cartoon was humorously going to display, life is a walking satire, a cartoonists delight. Beautifully written, blessings Roy
