I bought one of the Doonesbury books in tenth grade. It was promptly confiscated from me when I pulled it out at school. I got it back the following Friday. I agree with you, if you piss off every political party and slant, you are doing something right. Lol. Great piece. Gretchen

Hi Brett,
When I was done reading every other comic on the page, once in a while I would read Doonesbury. I thought it was anything but funny. If I wanted a commentary on politicians or the recent trends of society, I could read the opinion page or letters to the editor. Obviously it had some fans, but I wasn't counted among them. I was much more of a Far Side fan. I could relate to Larson. Thanks for sharing this bit of history. At least I'm better informed now.
Blessings,
Tom

Appreciate the review. I was never into Doonesbury either.

This is pretty funny that all sides of the political scale was offended by Donnessbury. I never read that cartoon so I didn't realize it was such a trendsetter for getting poeple up in arms.

I love how Doonesbury stepped up when it came to the controversies of the day!
He didn't take sides or did he? Either way, he always made people think about what was going on in the country at the time when they needed to ponder how they felt about what was going on. Thanks for sharing all the information. It was enjoyable to read and now, I know how far he went to shake people up.

Seems like they rubbed a few people up the wrong way, or ruffled a lot of political feathers. Which is exactly what satire does.
Well done.

Edit: seperate incidents of controversy (separate)

Doonesbury really did push the envelope and add words unexpected. It really wasn't meant for kids, so being on the opinion page was perfect as he did have an opinion. Well-written article that gives us the reasons for his notoriety.

Even though censored at times, Trudeau took advantage of America's freedom of speech (or writing in this case). Most of the strips you talk about here were above my head at the time as I was busy with two toddlers and not paying attention to the news. I am really enjoying this series. Are you going to talk about the story lines of Prince Valiant and/or Mary Worth? Soap opera comics I call them.

For me, comic strips aren't to be taken too seriously. I think the editorial section was the right place for Doonesbury. I must have read the Doonesbury strips, but have a just a vague recollection of the controversies. You do an excellent job of covering them, and I think you give a fair assessment. I certainly wouldn't agree with what Schultz said about Trudeau's work. Excellent presentation. judi

Freedom of speech covers a lot of territory, but it bring with it tons of criticisms and rebukes of those who feel slandered and shamed. Thanks for sharing.

Well, I had a great deal of difficulty completing this - I was laughing so much - but the risks they took! I am mildly - no - very surprised that Trudeau wasn't imprisoned or gunned down by one of the thousand who must have been sticking pins in his effigy!
How to last so long when everyone is your target? But, where I would be standing up and cheering is that Doonesbury didn't lose site of its main goal - to speak truth (however satirical or in bad taste) to power. Was there ever a greater whistle blower?
Well, astonishing research to put all this in front of us, Brett - the multitude of different newspapers and journals which ran the columns. I am in awe! Great job.
