The test went well and I'm impressed that a teenager is so enthused to help out testing her parents' invention. Most teens just roll their eyes and think it's just their parents' thing and won't bother to get involved.
Maybe Abby should supervise the suit protection? Who else could be in the locker room?
This made me think of how my car tries to steer away from the middle line even though I'm trying to avoid a bicyclist!

Yes, it's exactly like that! I have that too on my car. Good thing you can override it, though!
I think the reason Claire was so agreeable was that she really wanted to improve at golf and viewed the suit as her last resort. Her parents hadn't been too successful in teaching her.

If it can fix a headstrong kid's golf game, it can fix anyone's game. As far as golfer's are concerned, especially those with bad habits, this would be the invention of the century.

And perhaps a key part in resurrecting the game in 2032? We'll see.

A big Oh-oh at the end with Dad's warning her to lock it up when she showers. (But Abby's nemesis hasn't been introduced to the story yet. In fact no one that we've already met would be a candidate. I know you won't disappoint us.

Honestly, I'm afraid it may disappoint the way it is currently written, but I will be asking your advice after a few more chapters about how I should proceed with it.
Incidentally, I'm about 60% through The Gathering Storm and I am enjoying it immensely. I just finished the part about the Trojan Horse named Father Ziltinaur. Very clever part!
-
Thank you so much, Jim. I had no idea anyone would have gotten as far as that! Back then I had an imagination that wouldn't stop!
-
Oh, I plan to go all the way until the story is done. I really like it.

They always want to do more sooner rather than later:-) She needs to be patient and allow "the force" to be with her (that's what this reminds me of when she closed her eyes).
Why do I feel like that last exchange between Kenny and Claire is a clear sign that the suit is going to be stolen. Yikes!
By the way, congrats on being nominated for book of the month - hope you do well.

Good instincts, Pam. Can't have totally smooth sailing.
Thanks very much for your congrats. I think some of the other books have much larger readerships, so I'm not too hopeful of many votes.
-
I voted for you - your book is different.
-
Well, thanks. I appreciate that.

Enough already. Send me a 3XLT.
I took a lesson this morning and after sixty years was told I had to eliminate my chicken wing as my stroke is far too sttep, and needs to be shallowed. All the pros in the past diagnosed the symptom well enough but did not offer the cure. My new guy has. Now to hit a thousand balls to be converted. Sadly, I have a match in the a.m.

So what are you doing reading FanStory? Better get crackin'.
I took a number of lessons over the years and changed my swing radically several times. Each time was an improvement for a while until I was no longer satisfied and tried a different approach. I finally ended my golfing days playing Stack and Tilt which I thought made a great deal of sense. Wish I'd been playing that way for more of my golfing career. I came the closest to shooting my age with that approach, shooting 72 on a 6,000 yd course from the white tees when I was 68. That's as close as I'll ever get, though. Have you shot your age yet?
-
Yes, I shot my age twice from the red tees last year, a 72 and 73 at 5800 yards on a Par 73 course.. My best years were 18-21 as a limber back. Another two great years years came from ages 58 ( I retired) to 60 when I went sub par 27 times from the white tees.
-
That's good shooting. My best score came when I was 61 when I shot 68. That was the closest to my age until the 72 at 68.

I think the human spirit has a propensity to exist domination, so a suit that is a helpful device can still trip the user. Discipline in practise is a wonderful way to learn, to surrender to your instructor, in this case the suit. Well done, Jim, blessings Roy

I think Abby nailed it when she said it was going to be hard for a control freak like her, but she already had a good swing, so she didn't need it all that much and therefore didn't resist its urging too much.

I found women were easier to coach than men.

If I remember correctly, Claire forgets, and the suit gets stolen. Thank you for sharing this with us. I am liking the additional details.
Abby began. "The thing you have to keep foremost in your mind, (I'm guess by 'began' you mean speaking so a comma is needed after it)
Ah, the impatience of youth, I thought. (thought is normally in italics)

You remember correctly. That's coming on Friday. Glad you're enjoying the extra details, and thanks for the good catches.

Having the background of golf that I do, the story rings true. I sort of wish I hadn't read your previous piece regarding the suit, its theft and the resulting showdown. I am too far ahead of the game from the previous read to get riveted so to speak. Good story.

Yes, I can understand that. This will be appreciated more by those who haven't read that first. I have one fear about that, though, which is kind of a catch-22 that I will make clear through an author's note when we get there.

It looks like Claire is taking after her parents and living the game. Like most kids, she accepts the correction from tech more than from parents or teachers. There's no arguing with tech since there is no emotion.
It's great the suit can adjust to fit adults and ten-year olds. Amazing!

Well, she's 12 now, and it did require a bit of adjustment, but future versions will have to be made in multiple sizes--probably small, medium, large, and extra-large. Oh, if only this suit existed when I used to golf!

Very well written Jim - but i issue my warning right off. If I read of a child swearing again I will cease to review this story. Not acceptable. Gratuitous.
Apart from that slip from grace, this was a six star piece (of course I haven't!) of immaculate narrative, though I was on tenterhooks in the fear that the little girl was going to be electrocuted and end in hospital. (I wouldn't put this past you!)
Altogether well paced and well balanced between Claire just about managing to keep her enthusiasm in check - thanks to Abby's wisdom, and the general opinions of the company. Great outcome for her to make such enormous improvements to all aspects of her game. We are interested to see how soon that 'muscular memory' transfers fully to her unaided game. P.E. teachers will tell you that this takes months, not days!
So, be real, Jim, and you'll keep me on board. But no more forest bruins doing what comes naturally! Well, not from Claire, anyway!
Best from Paul

No, that is the only expletive from Claire, I assure you. It's something I would have said to my folks when I was that age, and they would have reacted much as Abby did with a stern warning about it, but then it was quickly forgotten.
I read somewhere that it takes either 1,000 or 10,000 repetitions of doing a new motion to work it into your "muscle memory" (I forget which--probably 10,000). Claire hasn't tried it unaided yet, so we'll see how she does without it.
I think I've probably beat the suit to death in how it works. Soon it will be time to see it in action.
-
We are totally at one. Sweetness and light prevails! (What did your wife think of Claire's remark?) Bet you suffered!
-
She didn't seem to mind that one. She's not as consistent as you! It isn't bad language that she objects too so much as puerile sexual references and innuendo.
-
Yes, that makes sense. Feel I shouldn't comment further!
