I remember following both cartoon characters but didn't always get the humor. This post shows how censorship is alive among newspapers or the editors that run them.

I don't know Doonesbury, but I am familiar with Dilbert. Some of the comics are very American and not relevant to our Australian situation, so we probably only saw a sampling. Well written article, brings up ethical questions of freedom of the press and punishment by the press for unacceptable offerings.

Hello Brett,
I've never cared for Doonesbury, but I did like Dilbert. It's been years since I've read a newspaper though. I recently bought some stamps featuring some classic comic strips. The stamps were years old, when stamps were only 32 cents. There were classics like Dick Tracy, Lil' Abner, Nancy, Blondie and others, as well as one or two I've never heard of like The Yellow Kid. Anyway, like everything else, I think people are too often choosing to be offended. What ever happened to the first amendment?
Thanks for sharing.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

It is funny how the freedom of the press is upheld as long as the tender feeling of super conservatives or ultra liberals are not made to think people have different opinions.

There's a thin line in what a cartoonist can write when published in particular newspapers, and I perfectly understand that the papers are in control. But it's kind of gotten like all media these days. Journalism was once supposed to be unbiased reporting, but now days, every network or media spouts their own propaganda. So, why would cartoons have to be any different, unless for the wrong paper. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Do not believe newspapers should be allowed to censor comics. Do very much appreciate your support.

This is another interesting article. I must admit, I never did like Dilbert, didn't really get it. Doonesbury was just opposite. Loved it. Haven't seen it for several years since local paper chopped it. We're a very conservative area, except the Trumpers, who are scary crazy.

I used to love Doonesbury. I probably didn't understand the political dynamic of at until much later. I have never been a Dilbert fan. This was very interesting. Great piece. Gretchen

I reamember Dilbert and Doomsberry from years ago when I took a newspaer. I didn't know anything about them getting in trouble. I enjoy political cartoons but I guess they are only on editorial pages. I guess a syndicated cartoon would be limited in what they could get away with. How about Pogo. I seem to remember it experssed some opinions that might have been controversal.

I remember both of those comic strips and read both of them. You are doing a great service with these posts. Thank you for sharing them with us. I can't wait for the next one.

Very interesting article. You're right. These two really upset the cartoon applecart. When people don't want to have anything to do with the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Kate Smith, Dr. Seuss, and others, Scott Adams should have known what would happen to him when he made those remarks. These days, if anyone dares to say anything unacceptable to the elites in our society, they will be cancelled. Doonesbury seems so long ago, I've forgotten about it. I really don't remember the details of the Watergate comments. I'll look forward to reading more about it. judi
