This is another excellent story about comics. I love to learn and this topic has so many directions, including historical considerations as you've shown. I think I will bookmark these if I can figure that out. It's inspiring me to look at the art. I'm an artist, so this is interesting. I will continue to look into this from the prospective of the artists st too. I like editorial cartoons and I wonder how they began.

Lol. I remember grabbing the comic section before any other member of my family could get their hands on it. It was comics so it was meant for me. Loved Peanuts and Hi and Lois. Beetle Bailey. All the classics. Lol. Good memories. Gretchen

As newspapers and the comic column has become a think of the past, we look back and remember first the comic strip appeared in black and white. We had (Andy Cap) appearing regularly in a national newspaper. Then there were the coloured comics and rare copies are now worth a fortune as they are collectors pieces. An interesting post Brett, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

I can't imagine a time when colorization of comics did not exist. Actually, I never thought about it. The 'Funnies' were always in color. I can understand how colorization would boost newspaper sales during the 1800s. My husband still subscribes to several newspapers, but most people get news from the internet or TV. There needs to be a modern day boost. Thanks for sharing this informative bit of research.

Hello Brett,
thanks for sharing this little bit of history with us. As you are aware, newspapers are becoming a thing of the past. I suppose that's good for the forests of the world, but there is something very satisfying about sitting down in your easy chair and unfolding a newspaper. It just seems more civilized somehow.

I had no idea colorization of comics began that early. Our local paper only colorized the outside front and back, not the inside comics. Is that the way it was done early on?

Our newspaper, if you could call it that, has become smaller and smaller. The problem really worsened during the COVID restrictions. Advertising revenue couldn't depended on, because the department stores that usually did so much advertising had closed. The internet edition also competes. Anyhow, the city, which once has multiple newspapers, is down to one which publishes five times a week. There are no special sections anymore. Appreciate your writing about the subject. judi

I can remember when old newspapers would wrap up fish and chips to take away, they don't do it these days, we still have the weekend papers delivered, but digital seem to be the go now, beautifully written Brett, blessings Roy
