I knew there was a reason why you named him "Putt" and I'm glad to see the PACK team doing so well. I'm hoping that they win and that the wedding goes as planned! I liked the snide remarks about those slow Snogs. I'm guessing these were inspired by comments you heard over the years.

Thank you very much, Helen. The time seems to have flown by, and it hasn't been quite 1 year yet since I joined FanStory.

It's funny the way that "Putt" came about. I've had the name "Putney Pell" in my mind for a number of years now, planning to use him as a character in a golf novel one day, and it really was coincidental that I got to use him in this way--to derive the name for putting. Either that or it was in my subconscious to do it. But I don't remember that being a conscious thought when I came up with that name.

In a previous chapter, I described how Aggie refused to play from a shorter tee, wanting to compete with the men on an equal footing. I don't really know what Cat's preference is. I'll have to ask her sometime.

Well, the Snogs may be slow, but golf is slow. That's one reason it drives some off. And they won this match, so they must be doing something right.

Playing again tomorrow, but not until after church. That would never be the priority in today's game (and I'm talking about ANY game).

Perhaps golf doesn't have to be so slow. You'll see a few solutions to this in coming chapters both in this part and in Part 4.

Now, that was a first. Having Putt encourage the gallery to make noise. I always got a kick out of the tv announcer whisper is commentary though he was probably far enough away from the play that he could have screamed it.

I like your story when it maintains a vital connection with the action. I liked the comments from the audience.

Yeah, I think that was all an act by the commentators to make your think he was close to the action. There are a very few cases where the gallery is encouraged to make noise. One of them is during the Waste Management Classic where the 16th hole, a par-3 hole, is entirely enclosed by stadium seating, and their is always a wildly raucous (drunken) crowd around that hole that is encouraged to make noise. Sometimes at the Ryder Cup matches too, they are encouraged in some places to make noise. As long as the noise is constant and not a sudden noise, there isn't a problem to the golfers who are the ones who encourage it.

You do a great job explaining the play and the interaction between the players. Love that the terms 'putt' and 'putting' have an origin in this ancient Scottish game. I'm learning a lot about gowf. Not sure I'll take it up or even go watch a live match. I think your storytelling is what brings it to life.

I'm not a football fan, but I really enjoyed the TV program "Friday Night Lights," which is all about football, but also a very compelling story about the characters.

Oh my. Post 200 ?? I thought you had been here since cosmic dust landed from the Big Bang blow. I shoould have passed on your story today, for the way I played was SNOG like I guess. 39-44. I hot it like a pro the first 4.5 hole which was followed by a s h a n k. I added another s h a n k later in the round. Stupid game. I need a new hobby. How does knitting sound?

Too bad. 44-39 would have been a lot more satisfying. I always used to hate following up a good front 9 with a crap back 9. Still, 83 is not too shabby. Those Sherman tanks will get you every time, though.

In a competition, they've worked out their strengths and weaknesses, and now more competitive then ever, they are a much more cohesive unit, it's the same in most sports, the players manage to work out just where they ate good at playing, well done Jim, blessings Roy

First of all, Jim, Congratulations on your 200! Yeehah! - a great milestone.

And now from my Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (but with the American spelling), I thank you for your latest etiological myth! (How things got to be - like 'How the Elephant Got His Trunk') - and now I know why you gave your character the daft name, 'PUTT'! I should have seen it coming from a mile away - but, no - I was concentrating on the story, just as you hoped I would!

It was well told as always, and good idea to have some diversions - but I wish your second team wouldn't keep losing! They are so predictable.
Great stuff, Jim - boy those Snogs are slow - look forward to some more wiseacres next time.

I'm delighted I succeeded in distracting you enough until the grand reveal of the derivation of "putting," Paul!

I've played with a few guys over the years who were as slow as the Snogs. Very aggravating, especially when they aren't very good golfers. I once watched a guy on the driving range whose backswing was so slow, I could have taken two full swings in the time he took to get to the top. And I wasn't that fast myself! It was unbelievable.
