That's really cool that Ben knew most of the knots from his work on the farm, the railroad, and the mining. Who knew that there would be similarities across such different occupation. Glad that Ben was able to protect Jimmy!

That was a shock finding Ben on a boat. I thought at first it was a dream or a vision. I'm not sure what the the chapter you ommited was about and if it was something you plan to add later.

It was almost all preaching as Ben searched the scriptures about people dying who never heard the Gospel.
Then he got on a replacement train that took him to San Francisco.

This is a good chapter where Ben adapts to a whole new way of life, and he may be doing what he most doesn't want to do--helping smuggle opium. At least he now knows why he ended up on a ship. God has a plan for him.

You've introduced a strong example of foreshadowing. The reader will wonder why this is the common belief: "Everybody on deck knew that boy wouldn't survive the day." I love the knot lessons. It reminds me of Girl Scouts. Well researched and written.

You did miss that chapter - I skipped over it thinking that it was too much preaching and almost no plot movement. Ben explored Jesus' journey into the belly of the earth while in the tomb. Ben was distraught over the engineer's death (a good, but unsaved man), as well as unreached people who by all accounts were going to hell (not having entered by the 'door').
Anyway, Ben made it to SF on the train that was pulled off the mtn by a replacement locomotive.
Oh - Boy Scouts! 'versimilitude, indeed. My wife pops my big head daily (because I need it popped)

The captain doesn't have a chance; he just doesn't know it yet. I think he will become shark food before the end of this part of the story. Well written and interesting, especially learning about the different knots. - Jim

I skipped a chapter that was mostly Bible study.
Ben isn't transported. He's perfectly human. As soon as Ben got to SF he was knocked on the head and shanghaied. I guess I need to beef up that paragraph.
