Like all new things, this technology can be used for good or evil, and strict guidelines need to be in place while there is still opportunity to consider and rationally discuss the ethics involved. I enjoyed your thoughtful and considered and balanced writing on the subject.

Hello Brett,
this is certainly a controversial subject. The vast majority, including myself, seem to be against the use of AI in medicine or at least surgery. Like so much else in our modern world, it seems that once a concept is dreamed up, it's only a matter of time before it's put to use. I feel like there is so much power and authority that has been given into the hands of a few people who may or may not understand the implications of the technology. First and foremost, I think we need to maintain ethical standards, and the doctors creed, first do no harm. Thanks for sharing this.
Have a blessed day.

Well, Brett, I think you forgot one very big question in all this. Maybe the biggest one and maybe also the big elephant in the room. What about ethics? Everybody seem to conveniently forgetting about that. Proper science and ethics should always be at the core. A1 has become a frightening tool in our already scary world. Ulla:)))

I am leary of AI to begin with. I sure there are some ways in which it can be helpful but I'm very much afraid that it will be overused and possible limit the use of common sense. A doctor might disagree with the findings but be obliged to us AI without taking into account the individually of each patient. How do you feel about the use of robots doing surgery as opposed to humans. It is happening.

I'll stick to doctors who still do their job. I don't want some programmed AI doing anything invasive to my body. If something goes wrong, it takes forever to figure it out and fix it. By then, it might be took late.

I agree with you, and to be frank with you, from what I am seeing from our so called doctors, I think AI would do a better job. I hope the doctors in the States are better equipped mentally and professionally to help their patients.

I don't know what I think about AI in healthcare. It sure seems to work for about everything else, but when it comes to dealing with a human being life, I'll let them use it on a whole lot of others first. Thanks for sharing and I hope things are moving in the right direction for you and your most recent bout with cancer.

This is a very worrying subject which we seem to know so little about and yet the genie is out of the bottle and there is no stopping its progress, certainly not when economic factors are taken into consideration. As for health care, the UK is in crisis with staff leaving the profession or demanding higher salaries, a general air of discontent worsened since the pandemic. Like yourself, Brett, I agree that this is too big a step for health/lives to be potentially put at risk by the use of AI without a regulatory body being first set up to monitor and assess. Thanks for sharing your fascinating and informative story. Debbie

It's AI everywhere now apparently. I just haven't got a clue what it is. But I never knew what Bitcoin was either and it never bothered me. Anyway, another useful and informative piece. Thank you.

I have enough of a struggle with human doctors making accurate deductions with diagnosis, some act only a little better than witch doctors only, making educated guesses sometimes, never Mind AI diagnosis, however the likelihood of that happening is probably a little far away yet, beautifully written, Brett, blessings Roy
