Hello, Barbara,

Beautiful story so well written. I wonder if you could have been a veterinarian when you were all grown up and out of the home. I guess you didn't want to disappoint your dad. Well done!!!

Thank you for the kind support. I think I started a family and had too many kids for that to happen.

Yes. I understand that. It took me a long time to finish my degree while taking care of my children.

Thanks for writing this biographical non-fiction. It's nice I get to know you more. We all have struggled with choosing professions. For me, I didn't know a lot of things when I was young growing up in China. I was good at science when I was in school so I chose to study physics. But when I went to the famous Peking University, I changed m mind. Yet in China, we can't. Anyway, I become an engineer and I like it better than physics. Now I'm semi-retired and write fiction and poetry a lot. I love to write. It has worked out. I currently have two books at work.

Looking forward to reading more of this book.

Thank you for the kind support. The father of the girls I'm writing this for is an engineer.

I liked the artwork you chose and the honesty in this letter. It is so important for our children and grandchildren to know what things were like for their parents and grandparents. It is interesting to me because my mother's father didn't believe in education for girls, and my mom wanted to go to college so badly. She told me that my grandfather told her they were wasting their money sending me to college. I was fortunate that she didn't listen.

I can imagine how you must have felt being told you couldn't be a veterinarian, but you did get the chance to help other students with their hopes and dreams, as well as giving your granddaughters encouragement to be what they want to be. They even have another role model for a woman veterinarian in the family.

A good job with this topic and the lesson learned. When I was typing my comments, veternarian was highlighted.

It's good you had that kind of upbringing that encouraged education. I taught in a school where the 8th grade graduation was fashioned after a high school graduation because historically kids did not go beyond the 8th grade. It has changed a bit however still not everybody graduates from high school. What I wish I had known when I was younger is that females can be whatever they want and don't let anybody tell you they can't.
This has a strong message.

This is another great post you have penned to give to your girls. I wish someone in our family could have done this for us, but nobody thought about this type of thing. Thank you for sharing. love and blessings, Teri

This is absolutely a letter they should receive at least 2 years before going to college. They may not want to do college, but they should know they can do anything they want, maybe within reason should be mentioned. Very good writing, even the big brown eyes effect.

Thank you for your kind support. I have a feeling in this family not going to college isn't an option. My son is an engineer with a masters degree and working at a large hospital in St. Louis and teaches at a jr. college and their mom is a biology professor at a university.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. When I was young, most folks did not see it as essential that girls received any type of education. I am glad my mother was there for me or I would never even have finished high school.

Hi Barbara. It always amazes me how advanced in our thinking were in the Scandinavian countries. I'm 71 and nobody would have lifted an eyebrow if I had wanted to become a vet. I so wanted to be a pilot, but that was still out of the.question. so there you go,Lol. Ulla xcx

Barbara, I'm right there with you. I wanted to be a journalist - my brother-in-law even offered to pay for my first two years of college. My parents said no. They wanted me to work as a secretary in an office where I would meet a man and get married and raise a family.

I left home at 20, went to school for journalism at night, and did eventually meet a man at work and raised a family with him.

Still, I told my kids to follow their dreams when it was time.

I'm glad that you're sharing that same opinion with the grands.
