Oh WOW!!! What an amazing story, my friend!!! Congratulations on a well-deserved win. The prose is flawless and the story an absolute delight, plus educational -- I would never have guessed that turtles could be so smart and loyal! I am charmed!

They make wonderful house pets, and the cats love them. Thank you for this wonderful review and stars!

It may be that you need one more review to set this contest winner in the rightful place of "All-Time Best! If so I'm honored to be here, singing the praises of this charming story. I (alas) have had little luck with the few turtles I acquired as pets (I hasten to say I was a young child and sorely lacking in the skill set).

Ah, my Emilyn Jayne, my 14-year-old granddaughter has had "Shel Silverstein" as part of her extended family for three years now! (You might discern she is an avid reader ~ smile)

Congratulations, again, on the win!

Karenina

Thank you so much for trying to put me over the hump. Turtles make great pets. I'm glad your granddaughter thinks to, too.

Damommy, this is a wonderfully told story no wonder it won the story of the month! Congratulations. I had an aunt who had a turtle from a hatchling for over forty years. Outstanding. Terry.

I have one now that can never go outside, even if I wanted to put her out, which I don't. She's a bit deformed but does very well. She and the cats are great friends. Thank you so much for this wonderful review!!

I liked reading this. It is one of the hardest things for those of us who love animals to have one or more be lost. I did not see any major grammatical fixes, but I would point out that 'raccoon' needs to have a second c in the spelling, there in paragraph 2. Nice share.

Congratulations on your win. You certainly deserved the win with this interesting and enchanting turtle story.
Amazing a 100-year-old turtle and others who eat from your hand. I guess I underestimated turtles as pets.
Best wishes
Mary

Thank you. Yes, many people do underestimate them. They make wonderful pets in the house, too.

We had a professor at Brevard College, NC who was known as the Turtle Man. He saved and collected them from being road kill. I was a fan for a while until I saw a terrapin crossing a N.P. road and stopped to rescue him from the busy traffic. Closing in on the creature a car swerved to avoid me and crushed the thing spraying me with all kind of gook. Thereafter, I left rescue to the Prof.

That happened to me once. As I was trying to get across the road to pick up the turtle, some jerk in a pickup deliberately ran over it. If only I could have caught up with him, I'd have given him something to remember. Thanks for reviewing.

This is a marvelous story. I didn't know there was such depth to turtles. I do remember when we were visiting in-laws in Florida, I would walk to this bridge, and the turtles in the creek came swimming up. They always expected to get food when humans approached. One hundred years old--that's pretty old. And it's amazing they recognize your voice. You are really into turtles if you can tell them apart. judi
