This account has many strong sensory descriptions. Every sense is touched at some point. I how you threw a little francais in. It will draw some readers in & maybe take them back to high school or college days. Great backstory.

Elling gets to squirm a bit. Love it. I wonder what the old guy in the cave is up to. More than rabbit stew, I suspect. He knew they were coming, didn't he? And he couldn't do it to his grandson? I don't think they believe that any more than I do.

Hi Sally,
I knew there were other witches and warlocks somewhere in Aspen Grove. I'm sure that Bertrand Paulette is not alone in the deviltry of the area. There must be others. I could picture the 4 officers and their canines closing in on Bertrand's cave. I could sense the wickedness there. The pestilential heaviness was only mildly altered by the smell of rabbit stew.
You did a great job of describing the elderly Paulette. He sure fits the part of a demon worshipper. I wonder if Nix is nearby, or gone for good? And what a treat to hear from Patience again...
"Don't worry, Tommy. We're going to get every last one of them," I heard a female voice say.
I looked at Sally. "What did you say?"
"Nothing," she said. "It must've been the wind."

Sally's senses are much more finely-tuned that Tommy's. She could distinguish the odor of that rabbit stew from quite a distance, even with the strong smell of spruce and pine trees.

"Prepare yourself, Tommy. We've found a stone altar. It's obvious animals have been sacrificed here, but Doc Stuart thinks humans may've been sacrificed as well."
How many people were abducted and put to death there? And when people weren't available, the witches used animals... cats, dogs, etc. anything that fit innocence.

I found no serious mistakes, as usual, Sally. It's all nicely penned. I really enjoyed this chapter. It's one of your best.

This encounter with the old man in the woods was inteesting. He actually seemed almost human the later in encounter was much more chilling. I love that Sally was able to track with her nose by smelling rabbit stews. I sure hope I don't go totally blind because my sense of smell is poor. I'll look forward to reading more.

This new chapter begins with temporary Captain Tommy, Detective Sally Law with King, Lieutenant Miles Jean-Baptiste with Samson, and Doc Stuart searching the dense forest of Aspen Grove for relatives of Gaston Paulette. A mile in, they split into two groups when the path forks -- Tommy with Sally and King, and Miles and Samson with Doc Stuart. Sally's sharpened sense of smell picks up rabbit stew cooking nearby just before the old warlock, whom Tommy remembered from the emergency room, appeared. By initially greeting him in his native French and shaking his hand, Sally got him to relax, just as Dale Carnegie would have done. The old man is Gaston Paulette's grandfather, who says he'll go to Gaston's arraignment; so they do not detain him.
However, when Miles informs Tommy that he and Doc Stuart have found a stone sacrificial altar, Tommy agrees with Sally that they must bring the old man in for questioning. Sally has King sniff her hand for the man's scent, then turns King loose to find him. Moments later Samson streaks past, following King. Then Miles and Doc Stuart join Tommy and Sally to follow the dogs.
When Tommy has a tearful moment prompted by thoughts of Phoebe in the hands of Evil, he hears a female voice assuring that all those involved will be caught. He at first thought Sally had said that; but it was Patience keeping him on track, lest his anguish obstruct needed justice.
They surround Bertrand Paulette near his cave. He initially pulls a pistol to convince them to leave; but he surrenders when Sally clearly states the truth of his horrid dilemma regarding Gaston.
Meanwhile, at the county jail, Greyson Cole visits Fee to tell him that he has begun a civil lawsuit to regain what Fee had stolen from Simon's trust fund, as Victoria's accounting ledger shows.
A lot of progress has been made, but there still are enough loose ends to keep us reading.
Superb, aptly illustrated, and complemented by relevant Author's Notes.
