Hi Wendy,
well, you got me!
I was waiting with a certain anticipation to who this unwanted acquaintance may have been. A real tangible entity... so kudos for the clever conclusion.
I guess the recurring bad dream is one's conscience that plays mind games... the one that lays mind-fields for us to trip upon?
Enjoyed reading this little vinaigrette... clever and seasoned just right!
Sorry about the contest!
With our thoughts we create...
an open door policy.
Kind regards,
James.

Thank you very much James for this super review! I am glad you couldn?t guess the ending. Perhaps I have shamed her into not coming back.

This flash fiction story, Unwelcome Visitor, gives a name to that fiend that flushes up all of my self-loathing so I can bathe in it for a millennium at night. Down with RBD.

Yes, down with RBD. I hope I have publicly shamed her enough to make her clear off and leave me alone. Thanks for a super review. I am glad you enjoyed the ending.

I have a few of those unwelcome visitors. This makes a neat flash becaues we don't know who is visitor his until the last line. I like the way the story leads you to believe it might be someone who knows a lot about you but makes you feel bad about yourself. It is hard to get rid of something that you can't control.

Thank you Beth. Great review. Exactly right. And I think you hit the nail on the head. They are out of my control - and I like to be in control eg well prepared, punctual ?.

A good teaser in this one Wendy as I tried to work out the emotions involved. Those recurring dreams seem to pop out when we least expect them to. Enjoyed this one, and no, I didn't guess. A good read, cheers

I like the way you set this story up as a mystery, with little clues as we go along. I know all about recurring bad dreams. I wrote about mine in the Dream contest. We don't always know what causes them, but most of us have experienced them. This would have been a great contest entry.

So glad this if fiction. If nonfiction I would try to figure out the meaning of this recurring dream. But that's easy. The dreamer is also the visitor, I would guess.

Thank you so much. A thoughtful review. I think many or most of us have something similar in a dream which comes back in one form or another.

This is a well-written little essay, building up the tension - who IS this person? - to a gradual reveal. I wish for you that she would go away, but she really seems to be clinging on. As a very poor swimmer, I had a recurring dream of drowning until I actually did almost drown - then the dream left me. Strange, no? But at least Flash Fiction will often recur!. Julie L :-)

So sorry you missed the contest, Wendy, as this sounds like it would have been a perfect entry. I am sure that all of us can sympathize with you, about these dreams that seem to keep coming back.

Thank you Anne. Lovely review. Yes, our subconscious can play weird tricks, and it seems that dreams are beyond our control.

I am thankful that I don't have these dreams anymore Wendy, but I suffered with them up until I married and put up with it. Changing our lives drastically can chance our mindset and often make our sleep more restful. Anxiety can impact our sleep, a poignant write, love Dolly x

I knew you were personifying something but wasn't sure what it was. A recurring bad memory that preys on guilt came to mind. But yes, a bad dream could also. Sorry that you missed the deadline.

The weird thing is that none of the dream is based on fact. It?s always about not being prepared for or being late for my teaching, classes, lessons or kids in some way or another. I was always on time, well prepared, calm and confident, and had an excellent relationship with the kids. And I have been retired for seven years! Thanks so much for a great review.

Whew! You're so conscientious so the dreams are things you naturally work against in real life. 😊💞
