This is fun to read - much more fun, apparently, than the lecture. I like that you can make light of an otherwise uncomfortable situation, and I've always enjoyed your sense of humor.

By the way, I was completely wrapped up in your story and, if you hadn't alerted me to the poem's "bumpy" rhythm, I'd have been totally unaware. I was much more captivated by your humor and your rhymes.

I did just enter this contest as well, but our poems couldn't be more different in style or theme, so good luck to us both, and let's hope one of us is in sync with what the judges are looking for.

Ha ha Lisa Love it and thought you created a very funny poem with a great meter snd rhyme
And i am sure you lightened the mood lol
I remember going to an opera at my local theatre with my parents and being ignorant re opera when they started singing the dialogue I started to giggle and eventually had to get up and go out before I roared with laughter at this very serious operatic play
So your poem immediately brought me back to my night out lol
Cheers Chris

Thanks for your review - I'm pleased it entertained you. I would be like you at the opera, it's a bit too torturous for me.

Very catchy and bouncy. It is fun and light-hearted and you did very well with adding the rhymes. I know you say they are a little bumpy but it works very well and I enjoyed it.

You are certainly a first class iconoclast. The amazing thing was the the lecturer had a sense of humour himself. More of one than your friend perhaps.

My friend is easily embarrassed. I don't know why I thought that joke was appropriate to tell at an academic lecture. I did Latin and Ancient History in high school and am interested in Classical things, but that guy managed to make it boring. He probably laughed out of amazement at my temerity to tell such a juvenile joke.

He was probably nervous. Scared to hell what you might say next.

My friend was aghast and dragged me out of there. I was in a different city and knew I wouldn't see the guest lecturer again... he wouldn't want to see me again either probably! But you never know, it might have made his day and provided him with a good dinner table anecdote. It has for me.

Creative and clever you have written the best story in this category! You write with style and you tell an enjoyable tale with the boredom of a speech you gave the perfect joke which saved the day!
This is funny and sad at the same time.
I am glad the speaker got the joke and he laughed along with the audience.

This story poem, The Fall-down Comic, brings this joke into the story well, and makes it part of a seemingly real event. You have given that old joke new life here.

It is to me, a funny story. I am sorry that you find the Roman times, told by the speaker was boring.

Yet you had the guts to share your childhood joke. Very brave!

You ended your talk by asking the speaker a question he could not answer. Smart move!

Thanks for sharing

Lol. A fabulous story in a poem and I am still laughing aloud! It's very vividly told, and very witty and clever, filled with humour and clever wit. I like the title with its contrast to normal "stand-up comics" being reversed because of youre falling asleep ( which I would have done, I am sure!) Very best wishes for the contest - I predict it will do very well!

Lol. I marvel at your quick wit. I would never have been able to think of a joke so quickly and in such a situation!

You have written an interesting story in a poem that anyone who has ever attended a lecture about history can relate to. It can sometimes be difficult to stay focused. I'm glad the expert was asked about Caesar's armies and sleevies. It "lightened his routine." Best wishes in the contest.

I'm curently tweaking the poem a bit as some of the rhythm is rather bumpy.
