Oh, Beth, I am loving this more and more! You've reminded me of all the things I did in New Orleans - traveled on the Cotton Blossom, went to Irish bars, where I think even the beer was green, visited St.Louis Cathedral - but my favorite experience was sitting by the Mississippi, eating as many beignets as I could afford to buy! I swear I put on 4 pounds in a morning! (and lost a lot more than 4 dollars!)
All your story resonates - traveling over lake Pontchatrain, staying in Slidell - and all the water! Neighbors took us out on their Motor Yacht along the bayous until we reached the some big water near the Gulf - time on the Mississippi on paddle steamers - and, big mistake - sunbathing by the bayou, when I was introduced to fire ants! I didn't know you could leap horizontally from a sunbed, four feet in the air!
People like your Governor usually end in prison in Louisiana - they have a long history of politicians who cook the books - but at least Christi got a great autograph - and with look never discovered the truth about him.
Great reminiscence.

His Paul. I'm sorry I late replying to this one. I had to make to go our of town and I had a lot of reviews when I returned. I doubt many places send moving companies nowadays. New Orleans sounds fascinating. I loved the paragraph about the artists even though one did yell at your son. I never gave it much thought about the parishes, but I guess most cities call them boroughs. Thanks for sharing, Beth. I look forward to reading more.

Thank you faith. Every state but Louisiana calls the districts counties. Louisiana was once part of Mexico and mostly Catholic. It think the church called the districts parishes and Louisiana just kept calling them that. Thanks for continuing to review.

I visited New Orleans and the French Quarter once over forty years ago and loved the atmosphere. I enjoyed following your family around especially since you included personal snippets i.e. Don touching the paint and Christi wanting an autograph.

Thank you, New Orleans is a unique town. It is almost like visiting another country. They have different accent there and the are a fun loving bunch of people. The French Quarter is especailly differents.

So now I know a little more of the rest of the story! Excellent writing. Your writing is such that I did not ever have to strain to formulate an image of what was happening and who was there. Stressing the fact that your writing talents far exceed mine, I have two miniscule suggestions: In thst fourth paragraph, I believe you need a comma after "since I wasn't working". Otherwise, it seems to read that you were working the kids. Also, I don't think you need that word "old" preceding "antebellum"as it seems redundant. Looking forward to more!

Beth, after you mentioned that people were not being notified of your posts, I realized that I wasn't being notified of several others' posts. I wonder how many people are not seeing my posts. I hope it gets straightened out soon.
Moving to a new city, especially if it is full of life and history, can be a lot of fun and a great experience for children. Thanks for sharing this story with us.

Thank you Pam. New Orleans is a place like no other city in the US. It is mixture of cultures and a very old city with a lot of history. In that sense is a bit like St Augustine. The original residents were French from Canada but there was also a large Irish population and more recently people from all over the world. Voodoo is part of culture but the majority of people are Catholic.

Than you Ulla. New Orleans is a fun city. Like everyone it isn't all good but it is unique and interesting the poeple see to manage to have a goodtime.
