Hi there,

This is a good, strong little piece. Sometimes we just get in the way of ourselves as is the case here.

"Have you lined my burrow with smooth pebbles? The walls of the current one are far too rough for my smooth carapace. - need closing speech marks at the end here.

All the best
G

    Thanks, G.

Good catch on the closing quote.

One qoute and you are ready to put down all of the wonderful things aristotle gave to this world. He gave so many deep thoughts and ideas to our understanding of the way things were and the way things could be if we only listened to his wisdom and took his advice and acted on them so that we would become better and more civilized people.
All this and yet you wrote like you learned nothing from aristotle and other wise folks.

I thought my reference to Aristotle supported what others consider a fallacy. I honestly don't know why it's a fallacy, because it seems like it is true. I have the greatest respect for Aristotle and Aristotelian logic, and I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I didn't.

No worries. It was just a misunderstanding. Thank you for explaining.

This is another post which provides a good topic for conversation. For sure, the queen ant got what she deserved in my opinion. She wore those good ants down with her ongoing demands.

I guess she didn't know what the stakes were for delaying.

As I read this modern-day fable, it took me back to elementary school when we sat in a circle and the teacher read fables and fairy tales and then explained the life lessons in the stories. I enjoyed reading this fable even though we all knew where it was going and the lesson it was demonstrating. It was fun getting there. Well done.

I always enjoyed fables too. We have a book of them that we used to read to our kids and grand kids. Some good life lessons in them to be sure.

I enjoyed this story - a bit like a parable. Had I been writing it, I think I would have missed out the last line about perfect being the enemy of good, as I think the story conveyed that message really well on its own.

Thank you Sarah. I just tried to follow the usual fable format a la Aesop, in which the last line gives the moral of the story. A fable is like a parable, but it usually contains animals as the main characters and is usually secular in nature.

You have written a great modern day fable. It would make an excellent children's book with appropriate illustrations. I suppose the ending might need to be modified. We wouldn't want the little kids to end up in tears, but kids are tougher these days than we were, so maybe not. Well done.

Thank you, Mary. I'll try it out on my grandsons and see how they respond.

Great idea. It's a creative and entertaining lesson--the best kind.

Another Jim's Fable. Will you publish when your output equals Aesop's?
Really it's a good thing the queen got staked, because it seems she was going senile. I'm glad the poor little worker escaped. Cheers, Julie

I've got a looong way to go then. Yes, I think the ants deserved a new queen--someone with a little more sense. By stalling like that, I don't think she appreciated the severity of the stakes.

Jim, this is very well done. I don't have a six left, but it is most worthy of high ratings. Here is some food for thought. It occurred to me after reading the story. You might consider writing some more "new fables."

I think a collection might make an interesting young reader's book. You could sign up for clipart.com and find thousands of potential illustrations to use for such a project.

You should give it some thought. Outstanding work. Terry.

Thank you for your virtual 6, Terry, and for your wonderful review. I will give your suggestion some thought. I've always loved fables and think they are a great way to get a point across.

Great wordplay "we will be in grave danger of a stake being driven through the heart of our colony." A bit of this reminds me of Watership Down. There is suspense for anyone who has read that. This was great with a strong message.

Thank you, Liz, for your wonderful review. I am extremely honored to be compared to Watership Down, which I loved.

If you are ever thinking you have a need to write, this would be good fodder for a
longer story with all kinds of chapters. Don't end it so soon & have a backstory as to why the queen has such a narcissistic personality.
reply by the author on 10-Jun-2023
Narcissistic and dumb! I don't think she realized the stakes involved by delaying (pun intended)!

You write a very good fable. Aesop may not have understood an IT project, but he would have understood Queen ant making a hash of her project. She asked too much of her workers.

Thanks very much, Carol, for your 6-star review. I really appreciate it. That system lasted over 30 years before finally being replaced by large, packaged software. It was continually enhanced over time, proving the manager wrong time and time again.
