I remember this broadcasting company that were able to get their signals all over the US. THe KDKA call letters sound familiar. They came in really clear at night after a couple of local station went off the air. The grand old opera was somethng we never missed on Saturday Night. I do remember a lot seed companies advertizing as well on the nightly broadcasts. The stories you're posting are interesting.

Dear Brett, first, everything I've read of yours so far has been so professional that it is worth an instant six stars, so I'm sorry I have no more to award this week.
Last time I reviewed your piece, I think I mentioned Ken Burns remarkable documentaries. When I read you, I can hear the same style of top research and authenticity being spoken to me from my television. You are that good!
And it is because I have watched Burns comprehensive collection of the American Civil War four times now (!) that I can place Shenandoah so precisely; what you have done is to form a bridge between the 19th and 20th centuries.
A lot of people write compelling non-fiction in beautifully written prose, but you do more than that: you add the profound authenticity of immaculate research. I could read your matter of fact account for the rest of the night and never once be bored, because your way of expressing it is utterly intriguing.
Worth a seven! Only got a five.
Paul

Radio stations broadcast to the public to deliver a message or to brings some positive vibes into our lives. The station I listen to plays good music, but the people presenting it have little to offer, and are usually unintelligent, unless I listen to BBC Radio 4. But it is lighthearted at least. I like that there was a program with doctors giving advice, I would listen to that one! A fine post Brett, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

I truly enjoyed your stories of these early radio stations. I'm a fan of the early radio shows and was a regular listener of WLS. My family listened to that instead of the Grand Old Opry. Interesting how Henry Field used radio to promote his seed business. Earl May was another interesting character. My family always ordered mail order chicks, but from Sears. I can't believe Haden beginning his musical career at age 2. Great material. judi

You're very welcome. I enjoy stories about early radio. In the past, there were several radio stations where I live. They used a lot of local talent. judi

This is interesting. The radio seems to have been a popular fad with everyone having an excuse to listen to this group as they sell seeds. Little companies could become big business with radio advertising.

These pieces you are posting are very interesting. I like how you have tied advertising into this infant radio thing. I used to work in advertising. Amazing the way that has changed as well. I'm enjoying this series. Gretchen
