You describe life as I knew it when I was growing up. I remember those wall phones. In the old movies, everyone was rushing to use the pay phones. I definitely remember our first black and white TV. We thought we were really big-time when we got it, although you could hardly get a decent picture then. I agree with your point about change. Change is going to happen, and as you say we can fight it or accept it. judi

Life has changed. Things seemed simpler. People were certainly more trusting. I bet only three stations seems strange to youth now with so many choices out there between, cable, satellite and streaming.
Your granddaughters should cherish this view into your life and the comparison of their own lives when you give it to them.

This one was quite interesting and entertaining. When I was young, my grandmother had a dial to control the direction of the television antenna. I can relate to more of this, though I am only forty years old. Thank you for sharing. Good luck in writing these letters. Best wishes!

Barbara, I think I said before that I admired you for doing this. It's not an easy task. I even told my son about it because he's struggling with a journal at the moment (his son's 4) but he wasn't exactly fired up by my suggestion. I actually think this is a very interesting way of starting these stories and I too was immediately taken back in time and imagining my own experiences, let alone a young teenager who will be that much further removed. Just keep on remembering little gems like this - e'g' boiler that has to be stoked for hot water, clothes that are wrung outside, tin baths in the kitchen, licorice, Zubes and Fisherman's Friends etc. Great fun! Their eyes will widen each time they read - things have moved on so fast over recent decades. Thanks for sharing. Debbie

That's a good one although some still do that - if they can be bothered!

Barbara,

This is a short but brilliant addition to your Letter series for the book A Paper Time Capsule. You speak of a time I also experienced growing up in Bermuda. All the things you listed are quite familiar. Life was much simpler then and lest stressful. Yet you are right "change happens; one can fight it or accept it, but you can always learn from it." Well done.

Looking forward to reminiscing with you in the next letter.

All the best,

Eugene

That brought back some memories, Barbara. And some were better than things of today. The mobile phones, the computers, the fact that people dressed up when they went out. I still do, and wouldn't dream of going out for a meal dressed looking a mess. Now people live on their mobiles, and computers, no one actually talks these days, they text. I must preferred the way we lived. Well done. :) Sandra xx

This may sound unbelievable to them, especially more than ten years from now. You might mention the time limit on the phone as everyone had to share the same phone.

I think we grew up in the same family, Barb. The only difference is that we called the evening meal supper. Everything else is exactly the same.

Looking back, I can certainly relate to everything you've said, and I remember those grainy, black and white television screens of yesteryear. Thanks for sharing.

Ah yes, the old Brother typewriters and rotary dial phones. You certainly brought back some warm memories with this one. I don't know if these kids these days could survive in that time; but I can also say I don't know what I would do without my neices to show me how to use cellphones and apps. I guess it works both ways. But I prefer the simpler times of the sixties and seventies. I have you beat; we didn't get a color tv until about 1977. estory
