Like a haiku, your space is at a premium. when the wall came down what did you think? Did you know how big this accomplishment really was? What were you doing then? As in... I heard the noise but, I didn't know what is was at first. Crowds, multitudes of ordinary people were tearing and digging at the wall. People were yelling, laughing and crying. Years and years of banishment and restriction all gone in a matter of hours. What now? Things like that will mean more than a travelogue. And, remember, it doesn't have to be done all at once. And when you are sure one is done. Put it away and promise not to look at it until they are all done. Otherwise you will just pick it to death and never be done. And remember you have written many stories and books, they can learn about you through them. :-) Karen

Small details and large ones too! At some point, they will cherish learning these things about your lives. Our children hear us talking about our memories, but I am not sure the importance registers with them until they are much older. You are providing that chance to "remember" when and if they wonder about things when they are older.
Awesome!
Smiles, Carol

The details of war and the places of deployment would go well when they are around 10 I think. Your husband would have some recollections of his childhood .You could write about your childhood ....when you had a fall or if you were scared to see a doctor etcetc...
the young ones would understand about not liking a particular food ...
all the best .You have travelled all over and have had varied cultural experience!I enjoyed reading this.
please continue..

I plan on adding things like that is a separate letter. I'm following the prompt and the number of words with this one, but it's opening up entirely new ideas. Thank you for the support.

Every time I read my writing; I make changes. I am never satisfied. Who is?
And let me extend my gratitude for the service your husband made, as well as you and your family, as serving myself ten years, I know how difficult it must have been not to allow roots to be firmly planted.

I think the letter is great! Very insightful and like a window into time. It sounds like you lead an interesting life back then, and were traveling a lot due to your husband being in the military.

It says a lot without many words at the same time.

Well written and very interesting.

Thanks!

I think this is a beautiful letter. Telling family history is a special gift that you are giving your granddaughters not only for giving them family and world history, but a deep sense of pride in their family that someday they can pass on to their children.
The one line that struck me the most was: "Grow where you are planted." Wonderful advice.
Best wishes,
Mary

Your granddaughters will be thrilled to read these letters when they are a little older. This is a good idea, Barb. A little world history mixed with family history.

Thank you for sharing this letter to your granddaughters. I really like this idea. They are going to know so much about your life when they read these later. I am sure that you will have no trouble finding things to write about. It seems when we start bringing up memories in our minds, that many things return to us, that we had completely forgotten about.

I think it's a great little letter chocked full of some great advice. What really worked for me was that the letter captures moments in time like the Berlin wall coming down, historical moments that are once in a lifetime and wonderful to pass on to those who weren't there to witness it. estory

Hi there
This is a very interesting read. What a great idea, writing these things for your grandchildren to read.

Best wishes Jen.
