What a great challenge your children have set up for you. You'll do it in grand style, I know, and have a lot of fun in the process. Kudos to your kids to have envisioned such a project.

I have been blessed with great kids. Truly not because I'm their mom. I've many compliments on them through the years, even though I have often wanted to strangle them. LOL Thank you for the support.

What a wonderful way to have some cherished memories. I need to do something like that for my mom. She doesn't like to write down things, but I need to figure out some way to record her life.
I look forward to seeing what you share.

Maybe talking with her and you recording her life. I wish I had done that with my grandparents. Thank you for the kind words.

I've have to be sneaking about recording. I've tried it and she stops talking. But I'll give it another try. Maybe I can can use my phone to record. She might not suspect that.

Or just lesson and write it down when she's not around.

You're right. I need to dedicate some time to it each day. Thank you. I needed that.

This should be a very exciting project, Barb. It might be a little challenging to write a letter to someone who is twenty years old, while looking into a face that is five years old.

That's an easy answer, although you may not think of it. I got my idea of writing poems for every birthday of my wife, children and grands, from my son in lawâ??s grandmother, who wrote Godâ??s love to all her grandchildren, to be opened after she died! My reason is to tell them how loved they are both by God and us, what a legacy for them Barbara,, beautifully written, blessings Roy

I once bought a "diary" titled "My Mother's Life." It had 350 prompts, and I spent a year writing something in it each day. Using the daily prompt, I wrote about family my children didn't know, past loves of my life (that was hard to share), traditions and where they came from, etc. I gave it to my daughter first, then she passed it to her brother.

My advice to you is to write about things they will never know unless you tell them. It may be hard to do occasionally, but they will treasure your words.

I think this is a great gift for you, and I look forward to reading your letters. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Pam

What an awesome idea. I hope my children read my poems when I'm gone.

80,000 words? Good Lord, that's a lot. My stories are haibun with 300 words, more or less.... lol.

Good luck! It's a lovely endeavor.

What a wonderful gift Andrew and Katie gave you. They know you're a writer and that you have a valuable gift to give their children - your memories and a treasury of family information! I'm so glad you're doing this!

I think this is a most terrific idea Barbara! Your children, grandchildren, and even great-grands will be SO happy you did this! The other day I was talking to my daughter and told her a story I thought was long known. She was so surprised that she'd never known this about her mother. If this is your first letter, I think it is good to explain how the project came about, as you did, and also to make sure there are no editing errors. It is, after all, supposed to be treasured forever. ;")

I think this sentence is after the completion of the letter, but still, you might want to fix:
***What could I possibly had (have) to say that my granddaughters would want to read as teenagers or in their early twenties (add ?)

This will be fun for you, but I am certain it will be greatly appreciated by your granddaughters and beyond. Go for it! No life is ever boring!

Your family will be glad you did this. I've been doing the same thing with the gift of Storyworth my grandson gave me. Once you get to thinking how to start, it just flows after than. You can do it.

Pay no attention to naysayers. They will suck the life out of you. If I get just one grumpy reviewer, I ignore it. But if I got a lot, I'd pay attention.
