Well, I'd be a liar if I said I didn't know more than any man should about brother JACK. And admittedly, a little snort here and there would be a pleasant taste. But thankfully, over many years, I've come to think that nothing good has ever come from alcohol consumption, so I don't drink. But that won't keep me from enjoying your fine writing. Thanks for sharing.

Back in my early days it was a pina colada with a shot of Jack poured in the middle of it. My own concoction, but did I like it! Now, with my cancer it is nothing stronger than unsweetened iced tea. Always appreciate your reviews.

Hey Brett,
What is the difference between bourbon and whiskey? I've never been much of a drinker, I guess it's more of an acquired taste. The very few times I've tried whiskey I haven't cared for it. When I was a much younger man I used to drink a vodka screwdriver now and then, mainly because I liked the flavor of the orange juice. I have an occasional beer now and then and I have some Disarono in my cupboard that I haven't tapped into yet, but I can take a drink or not. I'd prefer iced tea. Thanks for sharing this interesting bit of history. No doubt there are a number of minorities in the country who have been responsible for great things, but never got the credit or the money they deserved.
Have a blessed evening.

Bourbon must be produced from at least 51 percent corn in its mash and aged in oak barrels. Another is where it is produced. (More about that as this novella proceeds). Appreciate your comments and the review.

So glad you confirmed the Lutherans were probably NOT "sipping saints!" Some Baptists I know who are supposed to be abstainers, are, on the quiet, "sippers!" Thanks for the interesting story a single spag for you. company's website as its fir(s)t master distiller.

Some of the biggest drinkers are supposed to be religious people. Not a criticism, a fact. Hope all is well in your world.

Charles Chiniquy was a Catholic Priest that came out of Rome. He worked hard in the temperance area. He tried to get a lot of people away from alcohol and Catholic Bishops were not happy with him as a lot of them owned taverns.

What a great story, and I enjoyed reading it. I have never heard of Mr. Green before. I am so glad his talents were passed down through the generations. Have a great evening. Shirley

This is an interesting historical study about whiskey in Tennessee. I enjoyed listening to it very much when I was a young person at the age of 19 I had already been drunk three times. Each time I would drink I found I had difficulties afterwards so at 19 I decided that I would not drink that I didn't need to drink to live and so alcohol is something I never touch. Patricia

I had my zany days with alcohol, once upon a long time ago. My addiction was a pina colada with a shot of Jack Daniels poured in the middle of it. My own concoction. Fortunately, those days are way in my past as I no longer imbibe anything stronger than unsweetened ice tea. Appreciate your comments and the review.

Well researched and well written. I am glad he is getting the recognition for his mastery of the distilling process, and not being shoved aside, for others to take credit. I enjoyed this informative post. One small typo: "Lutheran".

White lightningbeas popular in the making of whiskey back in the day. The revoneers kept them on the run never settling in one place. What my son drinks is Jack Daniels.

My husband, I, and our four kids (ages 4 to 9) were fortunate enough to enjoy a tour of the Jack Daniels distillery 26 years ago. The kids loved the spring, but the scent of whiskey not so much. I loved it, but then I do like a good smooth whiskey. This is a really interesting article about the start of the distillery and especially the story of Nathan Green. I believe I remember him being mentioned, but he was certainly not given the credit at that time that he should have had. At that time, we couldn't even taste the whiskey there, much less buy it in that dry county.

Appreciate your insights and the review. Interesting to read personal accounts of events.
Comment from Liz O'Neill
The very beginning of this chapter may have the reader doing research. This is a good ploy. How ironic: "Uniquely, the county is dry, though whiskey sampling is permitted in the villa's main attraction." This is an interesting query: "official records do not indicate if Nathan Green was born a slave or later became one." This is fascinating.

I found this really interesting. I'm glad you are taking on this project and look forward to more. The fact that this craft has been handed down and embraced by generations of Nathan Green, shows a love of the art of distilling and a pride in their work. Great job. Gretchen
