That's a modern story and reminds me a little of the Ant and the Grasshopper. But the squirrel here worked very hard and I'm sure he would have shared unlike Red. Congrats on your third place finish!

This fable, The Squirrel and the Cardinal, supplies the readers with a lot of action as the squirrel finds that corn on the ground can be just as tasty as a pie in the sky.

This is a very good modern fable you have penned about the squirrel and the red bird. You used very good descriptive words and I love the ending to this. Best wishes in the contest. Teri

The story is very well presented. I can see the squirrel waving its tail so it is filled with imagery presentation. Cardinals are such a gorgeous bird. Enjoyed your story.

This is fun, unpredictable and of fine length. The writer has a good sense of humour and an astute eye for squirrel capers. Descriptions all very evocative. Thanks for sharing and good luck! You have my vote! Debbie

A fun post for the contest and I enjoyed the fun here and wish you luck.

Just one edit for this line as I think there maybe a word missing?

(Hey, Red, beak (throw) some of that good stuff down to me).

Love Dolly x

Hi, Dolly, I?m glad you enjoyed this fable. It was fun to write about these characters I see almost every day. I used BEAK as a verb (meaning to throw) in this line.

I enjoyed reading this short fable with two meanings. First of all, the squirrel didn't want to forage for his own squirrel food. He wanted what someone else had, and tried to steal from the cardinal. Second, when the cardinal was kind enough to share, the squirrel wanted to pick and choose. You provided the perfect moral. Best wishes in the contest.

Your fable is amusing original and well-written. I like the moral of the story too - very appropriate, and the image is charming. You should do well in the contest.

I know that squirrels can wreck havoc on bird feeders, but you make me feel sorry for this one. He tried and he failed. You have to admire him for that, and what is wrong with asking for exactly what we want in life?? Very cute story.

I have a squirrel convention around my feeder every day. Usually they are content to forage on the ground. But there is one who is a daredevil who I do admire despite his failures. I am delighted you enjoyed my story.
