Yes, our memories can betray us. They can fail us and embarrass us. It is embarrassing if you can't remember a person's name. I mentioned the dog we had when we were kids to my brother today, and my memory was totally incorrect. We didn't get him from the person I thought we did, after all. I agree you might as well make things up. People probably aren't going to know the difference anyway. I already have a lot of things to remember. Excellent rhyme, and best of luck in the contest. Can you arrange so you don't have so much space between lines? judi

will try. thanks, Judi!!!

It's a pain. I have to go to basic, and then the page comes back with a bunch of weird A's and that's how I get to single space. With poetry it's not as complicated as it is with prose.
Go to basic, save, and then you should be able to adjust to single space. judi

thanks!!! though I hate to see the weird A's. I just had to get rid of dots and paragraph symbols for a submission for a chapbook in a contest.

Fun poem, but I'm convinced too many people have already made up too many words. I call my memory my rolodex and young people can't figure out what that is, so they don't know I'm having memory problems.

that's cute and clever, but what about when you talk to them and can't remember the word you need? And actually, in my poem, the making up of a word was just for something humorous to end on. Fiction!! :)

Hi Katharine,
it does feel like betrayal at times doesn't it? Right when you're in a heated conversation and you're trying to get your point across, the word you wanted slips your mind. I agree with some of the other comments, at least when you write, you don't have to rush to make your point. Sometimes I have to try to find a word that I can use as a substitute. I don't mind getting old, its all the crap that goes with it that bothers me. Well done gal.
Have a blessed evening.

thanks, Tom!
You know, sometimes I wonder, truly, if there's not some preservative or something in the food we eat that's causing it, or at least bringing it on sooner. Younger people are losing their words, too, I've noticed, - not as often, but sometimes. It is so frustrating.
Anyway, thanks for reading and commenting!
Are your kids coming for Mother's Day?

Hi Katharine,
Well, I think Jan and the two girls who live up here are going to go to the foot/nail place on Monday. All the other kids are hundreds or thousands of miles away, so I'm sure we won't see them.

This was fun to read. You gave memory a characterization. This is an excellent poem for the Betrayal Poetry Contest. You were able to reframe memory loss to take some of the bite out of it. I do not see any room for improvement. Have a blessed day.

thank you, ma'am! I've not tried Prevagin. have enough pills now to choke a horse, so ... haven't ventured there, yet.

Dear poet, brain betrayal, I
know exactly what you're
writing of. I can't think of some people's names,
including celebrity's name.
Or I'll just stand there trying
to remember what I wanted
to say as it goes out the
window, lol! I was just tested
for dementia, don't have that,
but I still have some cognitive
issues, I'm 65. This is such a
clever and creative poem.
It is also a stroke of genius
as a betrayal poem. My very
best wishes for the contest.

thank you, Regina, for your very kind words!!!
I was just tested, too, both my parents had a bit of dementia towards the end. Have been wondering about Prevagin (sp?) but take enough pills now to choke a horse! :)

Betrayed by our ability to remember, we reach the age of wisdom, yet can't find the word we are looking for. It's a good thing we write, as it gives us time to search for just the right word. I like the idea of making the word up in the meantime. I really enjoyed reading this.

that is exactly what I love about writing - the time to remember what I wanted to say and can't always think of at the moment.
Thanks for reading and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

A lovely guy hearted look at betrayal. I like how you have composed this poem with wit. It is always good to be able to laugh at ourselves. Perfect illustration to accompany your words. Good layout. Thanks for the laughs. Jacqueline
