This is a really good story with a surprise that is totally unexpected. You might go to Ralan.com and see if it would possibly work in one of the anthologies he always knows about (if he is still alive). He's had health issues off and on for years, but he has a fascinating knowledge of the markets.

Thanks, Carol. I will watch his site and see when they are taking submissions for his next anthology. I did go on and he is still alive and kickin!
Appreciate you!

Ralan lists several anthologies, but he is not the author. He just collects and shares publishing information.

You did a great job with the supernatural aspect of your
story, Douglas. I enjoyed reading it. Your words were
descriptive with great details and a smooth flow. I wasn't
expecting all of the events and activities of the night to
be filled with spirits only. However, that was a great addition.
Poor Queen. It seems the idea of her birthday celebration has
kept her alive for year after year.
Thanks for sharing and congrats on 3rd place, Jan

Thank you, my friend. An interesting contest, indeed!

I liked your story! And it's perfect for a supernatural. That the party was only a brief haunting of spirits is sad, especially as it is because of human wars that rob lives from poor and noble ones alike.
One typo:
"The red?" She asker her most trusted palace worker. (asked)
Congratulations on your third place finish!!

How could one not like this great post Douglas. Most imaginative, ah yes I smelled a rats early when the general didn't share the results on the battlefield. She was doomed to relive those awful days ad finitum, or at Least until she enjoyed them forever, beautifully written my friend, well done, blessings Roy

It's surprising how a person can write and make events supernatural. The strike for the writer's guild (California) will perhaps change the ways that we as writer's think.
I was thinking about the coronation this weekend when reading your story. I wonder if they miss Queen Elizabeth yet? Katherine will make a gorgeous queen one day.

Been a minute since England has had a king. I liked writing this story and was surprised it placed with such stiff competition.

This was a sad and endearing piece. I felt for the queen and her anticipation of her birthday. So many times we all forget what a special times birthday's are.

Thanks Cathy. Eliciting emotions with my writings is my goal. I loved the line about her clapping her frail hands with joy. I was trying to make her feel real and human.
Comment from RodG
I really enjoyed this story. An excellent job of setting the opening scene and introducing Queen Agatha as she welcomes her guests. One does not realize this is a ghost story until it's midnight and all the guests leave. You do evoke sympathy for this ancient queen who only has one day a year to look forward to. Rod

This is an imaginative and enjoyable little Flash with colourful descriptive prose and good pace throughout. The story is absorbing and unpredictable in its outcome. I love the Queen clapping her frail hands with joy. In conclusion, the whole atmosphere of the occasion (and the contrasting reality) are well conveyed. Thanks for sharing and good luck! Debbie
