I have come to smile as I log in to FanStory, knowing I am still on the journey of your napowrimo posts and having pondered each of those that have come before. We are not so dissimilar in age. Therefor I feel these words wrap around me like a favorite old sweater. I look in the mirror and am astounded to NOT see the young heart and spirit I somehow forget has also been worn and rounded and formed, reshaped by the years...
But "old" is not a number... It is, at its best, a new place where we find ourselves and seem suddenly to learn to relish every moment that passes...
There have been bitter storms, and trials of will and sorrow... Oh, but hasn't there been so very much to rejoice about?
Living in the moment is suddenly imperative!
(And--God knows--it's what each of us ought to do!)
Such a great poem!

Karenina, We learn to cope, that was what we were taught when young. Been seen, not heard; don't get to big for your bretches;
an ounce of prevention; You're not made of sugar, you won't melt;
Don't stir up the mud...so it is amazing we have gotten this far.

I really enjoyed reading this lovely free verse poem and can so relate to it.
I especially liked 'the blame game' it really sums things up. Best wishes. Jen.

powerful and moving poem about growing old.
love the last stanza
So, before my final spring
gives over to winter crippled with strife,
I want to harvest the fruits of this life!
Ever mindful that my inner peace,
inner strength, my inner voice,
remembers to say, "Thank you, Abba/Father,"
for the wisdom that comes to this simple old man.

Very well done here, J. It was a pleasure reading about all the blessings to be counted in the simple joys found in a life well-lived.
Another fine chapter in your book and many thanks for sharing.

A wonderful, reflective, and beautiful poem meditating on a life well lived and lessons learned, changing priorities, and so on. The only suggestion is to not repeat "depend" in the second line of the following. Perhaps substitute "are".
"Remaining mindful of how dependent
humans, animals, and plants depend on each other."
I very much enjoyed this though-provoking poem, especially resonating with the fourth stanza.

Hi JLR,
I had nothing but a joy and certain comfort reading this wonderfully crafted free verse poem.
It may have been the affiliation I felt... like sitting beside a new found friend, sharing experiences and showing me the way ahead?
Such knowledge can only be gained though by the wisdom and acceptance of father time... and of course the attitude in which one chooses to progress forward in the knowing and wanting of a peaceful-satisfying mindset.
I'm really glad I came upon this beautifully crafted poem... it was and is, a joy to read. Thank you!
With our thoughts we create...
a choice of direction.
Kind regards,
James.

Excellent poem about the seasons of his life and everything he has learned. Now he is a wise old man reflecting on his life.
The free verse forced flows well.
the structure makes sense, it draws on emotions and it presents strong images.

One of the blessing that we old men can enjoy, is the blessings of learning. Learning from our own mistakes and those of others. Learning the importance of forgiveness, and the letting go of minor irritations. Learning how to smile instead of frowning. Learning how smiling can irritate the devil out of the demons that try to bedevil us. Yes, the accumulation of years can teach us much if we are willing to learn.
