That famous and wise philosopher (Judge Judy) often says God gave us two ears and one mouth for a REASON! (Sorry, I had to include that...)

What I find most profound here is that in all of our quest for knowledge and wisdom, we often feel we have to be so "proactive" --when simply finding a silent space and "hearing" will bring us all that is most treasured to know!

Karenina, I will share with you that I find, as I am getting older, my silent space is where I prefer to exist most often. Not that I don't like people, I do, but I selfishly try to experience moments of silence, even if it only between words that are spoken.

    Max Ehrmann, wrote "Desiderata"

(Which is Latin for "desired things)

I grew up with that poem hung on the wall in our living room.

My favorite line is now my favortie life philosophy:

"Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence."

    I'm with you on this...

Very thoughtfully written - and very thought-provoking. I think the last stanza is wonderful, but I like it all especially the thought of the necessity of silence while observing and listening, for gaining wisdom. Well done.

Typo: "I aught", shought be "ought"

An excellent poem, describing the intellect of the wise man that ponders and seeks truth, and all the wonder that, that entails. Wisdom and knowledge are cornucopia of what should be the seeker od truth, not a confirmation of what they think it is, beautifully written Jim. As always a wonderful poem, blessings Roy

I really like this verse Jim. The wisdom is pure and easily accepted into our minds as a peaceful balm. We all will learn something from reading this... to still our spirits, quieten our minds, and listen. Very nice.

Perfect final line. We can do much with our minds but it is the soul that has received God's grace and we should use hearts and minds and strength to love Him. Great meditation!
One suggestion to add quotes here:
Deleting the "I would", "they should", "he could", and "I aught",

I like all of this poem, but I really love the last stanza. You have explained well this Proverb. I have for many years been a member of Faithwriters.com, and I have regularly entered their contests. For this month, our basis for the contests is selected Proverbs. ; )

This very gentle and reflective verse ponders the value of acquiring knowledge for the sake of it but rather proposes that we clear our minds of "mundane thought" and learn to listen to "the words of old," contained in the Bible and more worthy of being acquired by the heart. It is a very sincere poem in praise of God and God's enduring knowledge and relevance in our world and I think it is, therefore, a very commendable and thought-provoking post. Thanks for sharing, Debbie
