I like this line. It may stir up fears in the reader, or at least a curiosity for it: "fearing the imaginary dangers around him." The several mentions of coffee does not go unnoticed. When I get things swirling around in my head around midnight I had to quickly figure theings out in the moment so I could go back to sleep: "Staring at the clock, he saw it was only midnight, and moaned again." The ending is tempting.

Hi Sally,
Great chapter! I especially like the first part about FEE at the old cabin. He was only thinking of his safety, nothing else. He's going to have to get a plan in order very quickly. The cabin should be good enough for some heavy duty thinking. If he was smart, he'd just try to escape the area entirely. He's actually painted himself into a corner. I was once a hunter many years ago, and the family had a fairly rough log cabin near Cappel Lake. So, I can picture the scene very well.
There's just one line, really just one word that bothered me...

"The young mother, who'd been robbed of her teenage life, trod softly through the kitchen and prepared a large mug of coffee, remembering it was half cream and half coffee for Simon, and coffee and a dab of cream for herself." ... ("trod" doesn't sound right to me, although I know it is. I suggest,
Treading softly to the kitchen, the young mother, who'd been robbed of her teenage life, prepared large mugs of coffee, remembering it was triple cream for Simon, and just a dab of cream for herself.)

Nicely penned! Looking forward to the next chapter!
Hugs,
Kimbob

They think Simon set the fire, like they were supposed to, but I'm sure Betty Jo and the others can tell them where he was. It couldn't have been him, because he was busy hiding in the bushes outside Betty Jo's place.

Plenty of romance to go with the drama keeps thsee characters interesting, Sally. A timely finish with the loud knock on the door and Sherrif Gonzales and his troops waiting, but for what?
This story is going well.
Cheers
Valda

Another great chapter, well written. I like the new relationship blooming between Candace and Simon. And I'm glad there will soon be an end to Fee's evil. Good dialogue between Candace and Simon. Blessings. Carol

Simon sounds like he's changing his life from bad to worse. His father, Fee, is a troublemaker from way back. Being he has found new love? just probably that is changing Simon.

Excellent chapter. I do like Simon. Somehow I always forget that these are chapters are cliffhangers and end just when I'm anxious to know what's going to happen next! Oh well, I have something to look forward too.
