In "My Lenten Rose" Janet Foor finds great word choices and restates the Gethsemane story of Jesus beautifully. The poem mentions details I had forgotten from that story: Peter lying thrice before the cock crows, and Jesus sweating blood in his agony. The poem appeals (in the sense of addresses) all the senses in this so sad story of human shortcoming.

Happy Spring, Janet. Where I am, at least! Frank

It?s Spring here in NC as well. In fact the local strawberry farm has fresh berries. I?m going to check them out tomorrow.

I didn't know if you were in the U.S. My in-laws are in NC, and we're down there two or three times every year. Better climate, as far as I'm concerned. I'm sick of long NY winters.

Your poem employs that classic image of the perennial flower to symbolize resurrection and the triumph of life over death. What I liked about your poem was that you brought into it all the suffering of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the important surrendering of his own will to the Father that ended with the salvation and the promise of salvation. estory

I love the comparison of Jesus to the Lenten Rose and just how similar their paths are. It is very true that perennial flowers have to go through quite a bit of strife, and their paths to blossoming are much like the path that Jesus was on. Lovely poem.

This was a lovely poem of conviction and faith. It is comforting that He rose again. It's cool that you have a particular flower that recalls this biblical story to mind this time of year.

Hi Janet,
What a terrific poem for Easter. Yes, I'm afraid we are like those disciples in many ways. We grow tired. We forget Him. We deny Him. We fail Him. We get disappointed. Afraid. Lost. Sometimes we'd even rather go fishing!
I like the way you make your Lenten Rose a part of the Easter story. As it blooms, you're reminded that Christ has risen.
"But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept." 1 Corinthians 15:20
I wish I had a sixer left for you. Your poem deserves it.
Thanks for sharing, and "Good Luck" in the Rhyming poetry contest!
Hugs,

-Your notes are appreciated.
-You wrote a very good poem with a good topic.
-Effective imagery and rhyme.
-You also tell a very good story
about the betrayal of Jesus
-You do a good job capturing
feelings he might have had, like
"Alone, he wept in agony."
-A very good concluding verse.
-A good entry; good luck!

Hi Janet,
I enjoyed your spiritual poem which reminded me of Lent and Easter fast approaching.
Well rhymed, presented and I found the last quatrain especially meaningful.
So often in our modern times Easter becomes about chocolate, easter eggs and soft toys.
I found it refreshing to reflect on my own faith and the significance this time has for me.

The ebb and flow of your telling of the agony in the garden always brings tears. But He has risen. Your beautiful flowers a reminder of Easter and what it means to know and love the Lord who gave His life. Beautifully written. I wish you luck in the contest. K xx

That is a beautiful poem and I very much like the connection between the crucufixion and resurrection with the return of the Lenten Rose in spring. You have crafted this poem beautifully, with excellent rhyme and metre, and I send best wishes for the Rhyming Poem contest.
