For leadership I really like decisiveness, one has to be, endurance is needed also as some leaders are in roles where set tasks can take months/years and they must be on the ball all the time, both mentally and physically, a wonderful and very informative red****kahpot

Great comments on endurance. I love the Keng Henry V speech. I remember the TV private investigator, Joe Mannix. He got beaten up so many times when he got too close to solving the case. Even if he landed in the hospital, that didn't stop him. He really had endurance. He must have learned endurance from his days playing football in college and then being in the Korean War. I like your references to the common people who show endurance, like those who work an extra job to provide for their families. judi

Thank you, Judi. Beth thought that IF by Kipling would have been a good example as well.

Looking back on it, What I did not see then is clear as a bell to me now. When a new recruit and forced to run a mile, I was sure my out of shape body would surely shut down Once I gained control over my thoughts, my body began to cooperate, and I learned a valuable lesson about using my mind to control my environment.
Years later, unable to find the kind of wages I had become accustomed to in the data processing field. I humbled myself and took a job as a security guard, and later a laborer in a warehouse. I used my knowledge and experience to create a desirable position for myself. When I was able to renter my chosen field, all the experience I had accumulated by continuing to work wherever I could, made me a highly desirable employee with vast experience. I am now retired with an impressive pension.

The basic training I hated but survived, made me a man several times over. Life outside the discipline of the military is so easy.

Saints Crispin and Crispinian, the beheaded Christian patron saints of cobblers, curriers, tanners, and leather workers. Their endurance went for as long as it lasted. Thanks for sharing.

This is very good and I like the poem you shared by Shakesphers. The poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling is one of my favorites along this line, particularly this verse:

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

This was deeply written with great descriptive measures and objective contents.
Also, rich in Theme and Imagery.
It read well and Flowed well with no Grammar Issues.
Thanks for sharing this and have a great day.

When ever I think of endurance, I think of the physical. As I used to be a fitness instructor, endurance is one of those fitness qualities that is often overlooked. It is all about being personally challenged. We muster the strength to overcome and meet these challenges with endurance. I loved Henry V speech written by Shakespeare. When the chips are down we need to endure the battle.

I particularly loved this paragraph:

These heroes are all around us in some degree or another. Whoever puts a bicycle together at two a.m. Christmas morning so it will be assembled when the children wake -- endures. The person who changes your flat tire, at night, on the side of the road, in the rain -- endures. The parents who work two or three jobs to provide for their family -- endure. Let's not forget the caregivers, who battle compassion fatigue to continually provide the assistance that must be rendered.

We do things like this for our kids and help those who break down in the rain and care for those who cannot care for themselves.

A fine post Bill, loved it.

Love Dolly x

Thank you, Dolly. I was happy to find a reason to put Harry's pep talk in. It has always been one of my favorite pieces of blank verse.

Another super meditation on the qualities of leadership. Endurance is a rare quality today since we are used to and expect instant gratification from our computer response time to food preparation time. No wonder our kids don't want to stick with something. Great idea to quote that passage from Shakespeare.

Thank you, Helen. I was telling Dolly that it is one of my favorite pieces from Shakespeare. The "band of brothers" speech.

Why did you count this as poetry? You should say this is an essay. It is an essay. I like your lighter writing. This is too serious. Please go back to humor. Just my two cents.

Well done.

All these pieces are set into the platform as a book. They are mixed. Somewhere along the line it glommed onto poetry. I am unaffected by it.

yes. endure. It takes courage and stamina to endure. and the will to do it.
Bill, i know you're speaking militarily, but your poem made me think of my grandmother who lived with us and was dying of cancer. Dad was overseas and Mom took care of us all. My grandmother tried her best to last until Christmas day. My mom wore a Santa hat and tried to make things happy, but her mother had died during the night. I have admired them both for their endurace and selfless efforts to make us children happy.
Thanks for your meaningful essay, and my best to you.
