I must say that anyone who takes time to read and apply the knowledge of this story can only be blessed with an enhanced skill set that creates valuable life qualities. Thanks for sharing.

Leadership in the military is a strange and distinct brand. As a DI you have the dauntless task of shocking a person with no previous experience into a position where you do not question, you just do. Your main objective is to respond immediately to a given command, your existence depends on it. In civilian life, tact is vitally important. Why? The person you treat badly today, might very well emerge at a later time as your superior. What will you then do? None of us can see the future clearly enough to risk making that kind of mistake.

I used to use the story of a platoon sergeant being told by the commanding officer to inform Private Schmuckatelly that his wife had died. When the platoon was assembled, the sergeant called for all married men to step forward. "Not so fast there, Schmuckatelly!"

Hey! I had a mouth full of coffee. I nearly choked. I just learned a valuable lesson. Do not read anything from you with stuff in my mouth. It is bad for my health.

This one is hard for me sometimes. I'm prone to be sarcastic at times without meaning to hurt anyone's feeling. At work, I tred to exercise tack but with friends not so much. Some people or more sensitive than I realize and I've said things that could have been more tactful. My mother-in-law was a wonderful woman, but she lacked a sense of humor and didn't understand humorous sarcasm.

Sarcasm is a developed sense that is lost on the very young and sometimes those more used to straight talk.

Love your different approach.

Tact is something I lacked in my youth, I always told it as it was and upset a few people, being blunt was something my Father always was and I learned to be the same. Since then I have learned to break bad news slowly with a sense of positiveness. Being tactful is something I have been able to teach my daughters successfully, I enjoyed your in-depth write here Bill. Being humiliated is not a good feeling and I don't think I would like those drill instructors at all! Love Dolly x

Thank you, Dolly. My kids, both teachers, were taught that the classroom is no place for sarcasm. I have seen it though, just as in the military, and probably in any job with a lot of pressure. Without it, those institutions would explode.

The British are past masters at sarcasm and when I was in the Police, you had to have thick skin x x x

Tact is very important when dealing with people that may work for you,
sarcasm may work well if this person is well known to you, another very informative read, love the artwork****kahpot

Thanks for another informative piece Bill. I particularly like the points you made about individuals who lack the art of tact.

I have to say, in particular leadership roles there is no time for tact. Decisions need to be made promptly and acted upon. This is not to say a leader should deliberate humiliate or embarass someone but firm direction is often required.

A good read. Thank you.

When in public, dressing down an individual serves no one but the person who is wielding the authority. Others around develop chaotic ideas of fear, disgust, and, narrowly, respect. Singling someone out creates a desire to retaliate.

When in public, yes, I agree. Good points Bill. Have a great night. Jacqueline 😊

Well, I can't see if there was a picture on top but I see that the bottom picture link was broken, at least for me. And there were so many blank lines. I agree that "tact" is most noticed when missing and that a drill instructor is not paid to be tactful!

The picture is of a chalkboard sandwich sign with this saying written on it: Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell and have them look forward to the trip.

    Lol! Love it!
