Hi Laurie,
This is a good free verse poem that reminds us how close a pet and his/her human can become. They can be as loving as dogs. This also shows how loneliness is a part of life we have to accept but let living continue. I like the photo with the reflection of the cat in the mirror which reveals the title.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Good luck in the contest.
Have a good day.
Joan

This is so lovely, I don't know where to begin. I could feel the bond between you two as though I were there with you. What a wonderful little companion you have for your nightly walks. I enjoyed this immensely.

Oh, bless you. For some reason, Diamond has recently decided to camp out a block away instead of on her own/my block...maybe the food is better? But she has a FaceBook page, and at least we can all keep track of her that way. Today I went out for the first time to actively search for her; for the past 5 years, she's always just been out there and ready to walk with me, and I miss her company.

Oh, dear. I hope nothing's wrong and she shows up soon.

She has her own facebook page now, and people take pictures of her wherever she goes in town. Turns out she walks with just about everyone here, lol!

I loved the confusion, which I am sure is deliberate, as to whether the cat or the human is telling the story. Such is the relationship that it could be either or even both. The relationship between domestic animals and humans can be like that, similar in their intensity.

How lovely to have her even if she is not officially yours. Your poem is a beautiful tribute to the loving relationship you have with her and she sounds like quite a character. Best wsishes for the contest.

Yes, Wendy. No vet bills, lol. When a new neighbor moved in, they felt sorry for Diamond, and let her come "live" with them, litter box and the whole works, but when she needed a vet, they magically remembered me having introduced them that first day, and how I had pointed to the big house on the corner as her true "home." She's like the mayor around here. Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Diamond seems quite the character. A good listener too. I love the personification of Diamond in the fourth stanza.

"You talk too much.
Touch me.
Even I get lonely."

I can imagine a cat thinking that.

An excellent poem. Best of luck.

Diamond sounds like a wise woman were she human. I love that she accompanies you on nightly walks and talks to you as you go. It seems so natural and normal. To me it does anyway. Your poem speaks of another feline companion who left when "the dog" came on the scene. He sounds rather gorgeous, "riding on my shoulder like a sultan king". It's just a pity he wasn't dog compatible. You would be right about Diamond's food providers.
She'll have a list "as long as a milkman's round". And she ( the chatty little trollop)
lays on her back and wiggles to have food magically appear. You are lucky indeed to have Diamond as your midnight companion, limping your way around the block. May she accompany you for many a midnight to come, Stay safe, cheers Cass

Thanks so much, Cass, and yes, we both benefit, and I have no vet bills, lol. Love this feline tale since I am owned by two cats. I like the image of the cat accompanying you on your walks and how the cat talks to you. You are both walking buddies. This is a wonderful poem that makes the reader feel good.

I really love cats, and wish my husband could get on board, but yes, in the meantime, this is a good enough arrangement. Diamond has a sister (cat) and brother (also cat), and has more or less done the same thing my Nick did when our dog Steve came to live with us. Diamond's brother Larry, a springer setter, loves her, but she's decided on taking shelter and all other amenities elsewhere. Larry's mom takes her when the vet is needed, but the rest of us are here for all the happier times. Thanks for reviewing!
