I admit to not being a leader and never cared to be. Don't volunteer is my motto. Yet, if no one else would do it, I would sigh and raise my hand. My handicapped nephew and his mother were just the opposite,

Thanks, Shari, for giving this a look.

You've just described the usually process that leaves things undone. Where everyone waits for the other or someone else to pick up the pieces. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Great remarks on leadership attributes and power of initiatives, taking charge when nobody is doing something. Your commentary got me thinking about work place activities. Thanks for sharing your thought, dear Bill. Well done.

A great essay on taking the initiative. I also believe that having confidence and intelligence to assess what needs to be done is part of the stew that makes a good leader. The "bull in the China shop" who barges ahead without the rest of the stew can do harm.

Loved that story. What a great parable for every situation at work or just at home in the family. I remember at work, there was a saying like, "If you see something needs doing, do it." I know I'll be out of sixes by the time you finish this project so exceptional work for the whole JJ DID TIE BUCKLE series!!

Initiative can be a tricky thing. If you take the initiative and something goes wrong, you're going to get the blame. It must be difficult in the military when snap decisions have to be made. If the soldier doesn't act on his own in a crisis, lives could be lost. Great comments on initiative and your story about Somebody, Anybody, Everybody, and Nobody. It makes a great point. Often taking initiative can get someone a promotion if the idea proves to be a good one.

Initiative is a trait that is perceived by one's peers and superiors, and socked away without comment. People, however, remember who can be counted on to do what needs to be done.

There must have been times in the military when you had to act on your own initiative. Sometimes situations call for quick action. judi

Well that was very well done and what a thing to bring forward. It's important though and it's been seen I've seen it. Why put off till tomorrow what can be done today. So you obviously put some thought into this writing. It's very well done. I don't see any issues with grammar or spelling or punctuation or anything. It's a great essay on a great subject and wow yeah you are so right!
Thank you for this mission good luck and have a great day

I heard many be people say when asked to do something, "That isn't in my job describtion." A lot of employees what do just what the have to do and not a thing more. In running a home, most of the the either the wife or the husband will that the initiative and do what they know has to be done. Living alone, You either do it, or it doesn't get done, because there is no one else. I like the story. It makes a good point.

Initiative is an all too rare quality. Lack of initiative may be attributed to laziness or to lack of confidence. You define it very clearly and rightly judge it as essential to effective leadership. The little rhyme at the end is very true.
