This was an interesting justification of your characters. I believe it told me more abaout you yourself than about anything else. Were you really that bad when you were growing up? And what a terrible country America is now (I find it impossible to imagine you as owning a gun). I will stick to England any day. kay

In many, many ways I see Great Britain as having a better system. Yes, I was very troubled. Had I not gone into the Marines at 17, but gone to school in the year that drugs hit our campuses like a storm, I hate to think what might have been. The USMC definitely matured me. I had a strong spiritual base, but Dad leaving when I was 12 took its toll. Unfortunately, I suppose, gun ownership in the U.S. is like owning a hat - it's there for whenever you might need it.

Wayne, this is excellent and the sad thing is that it is such a relevant and needed message in the US. I have been constantly amazed by the violence and anger I hear about, and the fact that most people seem to have guns! I don't know anyone who has a gun, old or young, (although I know some farmers have them to keep wildlife from destroying their crops.) I don't think I could cope well with the tension of living in such a way. We are not incident-free, but our gun laws are sufficiently tight that we have few everyday problems. The criminals continue to source them of course, illegally.
I thoroughly agree about being in second place is not losing. At my school we gave grades for effort and achievement. So a weak student who could never attain an A for achievement could still try his best, and thus get an A for effort. As I told my kids, "If you persevere with putting in your best effort at a subject you find difficult, you deserve an A , and you are showing enormous and valuable qualities in your character!"
Whew! I talk too much!
But this epilogue is wonderful, and thoughtful, and filled with wisdom and advice, all much needed, and I hope it is widely read and acknowledged.

    Thank you richly.
I wonder how I can insert that the acclaimed 'hero' was not a praying kid, but one of the troubled ones. The praying kids did nothing for fame or glory, but still, they 'are' just kids.

This is interesting and a bit shocking when you say you took a gun to school. My local school students do take guns to school and lock them in their trucks so they can go hunting as soon as school is out. That is way different than other plans. I think what you have said in this is very important and you should send it as part of the story, but it may not be used, or they might use only a small part of this as your author description.

Best of luck. Things have probably changed in the last 20 years when I wasn't trying to sell my work. You might have the best luck at Fundsforwriters.

Wow!! Standing ovation!! Thank you so much, for doing this epilogue, Wayne. I like how you show us the real possibility of these dangers and the right response. I like that you actually own firearms but protect others from having access to them. Most of all, I love that you urge all of us to pray!!

This is a message that needs to be heard.. over and over, because people forget to easily. You shared just enough of your own story to connect the reader at a more personal level. Thanks for a great read.

My favorite line here is this: The slowest in the race beat every single one who sat in the stands. I tried so hard as a parent to instill that in my children when they played sports, and even today I remind them when they undertake a new venture.

This was a very different story for you to tell after the Ohmie series, and I enjoyed reading it very much. I particularly enjoy this last entry, which says so much that your story could not.

Thanks for sharing this with us - the six stars are for the overall series.

Take care,
Pam
