I loved the way you phrased this and even daring to use repetition in an eight-word poetry contest! Your raise valid point which resonated with all the reviewers with visual appeal, too! Congratulations on the win!

Lol, I only entered from a mix of exasperation and a desire to just have fun. Never expected to win. But I do wonder when a poem ceases to be a poem and is just a strong statement .... Thank you for reviewing, and for the congrats.

Well, you got lots to agree with you! I think that form came out of trying to tell a story in six words like Hemingway's. That's what came to mind when I read the winners of the site contest.

Your presentation (I don't use the word poem) is visually appealing. The fact that you've won the contest with the most votes does seem to indicate that others feel as we do that a true poem requires room to develop more of a creative connection between the poet and reader.

Yep. It's not a poem. I don't know how a poem is defined but these with so few words, tend to be just statements or thoughtful questions. I didn't expect to win, so the fact that it did does say something about what several of us must be feeling. To me a poem must have a certain beauty and power to challenge or move or inspire with judicious word choices and imagination, flair - and more creativity and word mastery than these tiny ones can possibly demonstrate. Thanks so much for reviewing a non-poem.

There are now so many of these short 'poem' contests it is really dumbing-down any verbal explorations and imaginative flair.

This is a good entry to the 8-word contest. The text is a great size, and I like how you have formatted the text. The message is stated with clarity, and it is easy to understand. I am inclined to think as you these are just thought-provoking statements or questions, but they are not poems eight words and below. Your visual fits well. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you very much Sandra! Not sure how one defines a poem, but there must come a point where the words are too few to be classified as "poetry". Encouraging review - thank you.

This eight-word poem, Cutting Back, has the proper formatting and notes that the qualification for a work to be a poem is truly in the eyes of the beholder.

You are right. I don't know how a poem is defined, but it must stop being poetry at some point I suppose. Lol.
Thank you for reviewing. Appreciated.

I really liked this poem! You're right - they're getting shorter and shorter. It seems like every new prompt is for short poetry. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

You have said it all in the eight words you were allotted. You beckon us to wonder "When does a poem cease being a poem?" The shortest I ever saw anthologized was FLEAS:
Adam had 'em.

Lol. Yes, these very short ones mean every word must count, and at least they make a statement, hopefully thought-provoking - but ... are they really poetry?

Good question.
Comment from Sarah Das Gupta
It is true- there are a lot of contests for shorter poems. Yet you often find they say more than their much longer counterparts! Perhaps this is because every word has to work hard?

Yes, you are right. But it is good too to have the ability to develop the thoughts in a powerful way, and also display word mastery with skills of rhyme, metre and other technical prowess. I admire those who can do all that. I appreciate and thank you for your thoughtful review.
Cheers.

Hilarious. I share your sentiments. Eight words, in my opinion, do not maketh a poem. Perhaps it should be an eight word message or statement? I like your sense of humour and your attention grabbing illustration. Jacqueline

Glad I made you smile. That's worth paying the high entrance fee for so few words! Lol Great review.

Thanks very much for a great review. Glad to make you smile. The cost of entry into the contest is worth it if it brings a few smiles!
