When Does Old Begin

You pose an interesting question, and give an adequate number of examples as to why old age is questionable. When I considered myself young, my five-year-old daughter thought I was old. She's now fifty, so I guess she's finally right.
You've written a rant that probably resonates with many FS writers who are over sixty. I say you're old when you can remember things you used to do but can no longer do the things. Best wishes in the contest.
BTW, I see four generations in the picture. I'm counting the infant.

None can define it better than you have ... "remember things you used to do but can no longer do." Tom

Tom, This is a good question. At first, I used to think my grandmother was so old, but when I got to her age I moved up the age I considered old. I never saw myself as old until the aches and pains started, and I had empathy for Nana who worked until she was 82.
My only solution now to feel like a young whippersnapper is to hang around with those 80-plus years old.
Good luck in the contest.

My intent was to redefine how OLD is seen. We must consider it perspectively. I think this piece tried.

Exactly, a younger version for half the pay, I suppose this could be classed as equality as they do only have half the experience, our mirrors must come from the same maker, very well written, best wishes for your contest****kahpot

Well done, Tom. You have turned my question into a very thought-provoking poetry piece, with lots of questions of your own. I think largely it is a matter of perspective, and also one's own perception in relation to the body and mind.

Tom, whether this is considered prose or a poem, I don't care; I liked it. I loved the quote: "Dictionary.com defines Old as being advanced in years.
From what? Our teens?" To my 96-year-old mother-in-law, old is when you reach your 90s. All the folks in their 70s and 80s that live in her senior living apartments she considers the young ones.
I also think old depends on the part of your body you are talking about. I'm 71, and my body may feel old, but my mind still feels young. Even my memory is great except for all the things I forget.
But you're right--regardless of when old begins, none of us need trouble ourselves about knowing when old ends.

Heh heh, I think you're just trying to confuse, I must admit we tend to think old, is "washed up" unable to run a four minute mile, retired from competitive sport, "look at that old, cunning bugger, still playing well at 39." Heh heh, no...I'm old, well done Tom, you have an interesting mind, you like pondering, the unthinkable, blessings Roy

Me? My mind? I loaned it to the Scripps

I think one can be elderly without being old. I think old is a state of mind. I know elderly people who can do things that someone 10-20 years younger can't do. I guess what I'm trying to say is that "old" is when you feel old, whether it's due to physical or mental issues. There were days in my 30's when I felt ancient and there are days in my 70's that I don't--so maybe it fluctuates. :)

Yes. It's one of those questions that depends upon when you ask and who you ask.

Great question in rant form. Mine: When my food is puree'd and I can't do it with my husband. There you have it.
A delightful rant although I think mime should be given consideration. Oh, I didn't write one. See what I mean?
Blessings for the day and for the contest.
Sal :)).

Age has never concerned me. I mean, I'm just happy to be here. Well, at least most of the time. LOL. Yes, I'm old, tired and ugly. But if everyone lives long enough, they will be too. Thanks for sharing.
. . . when the hill becomes to (too) steep to climb.

It's an age old question.
All the above are correct.
Lucky you only noticed an old man in the mirror at 70.
I hope I can still walk up a hill when I'm 70.
The sofa has developed psychic magnetic properties. :-))Z.

I recommend, to avoid walking up hill, NOT to go down hills, and that challenge would be mute.
