Writing and Contests

Hi Terry, I've been on several poetry
websites, and I think some
poets/writers hate losing
contests so much that they
become petty and vindictive.
This other website I used to
be a member of had a situation of misogynists
joining the website to harass
some of the women poets.
Rather than suffer through
any more of that garbage,
some of these women poets
had to quit the website. What
a rotten shame. There's so
much hostility between
some poets too on this same
website. I have been fortunate in not being a victim
on Fanstory. I've had a few
impolite poets give me rude
reviews, but it doesn't happen
all the time. If anyone does
name calling I will screenshot
it and report them. Anyway,
have a wondrous and
creative weekend. :))))

Regina, thank you for your review and the six stars. Having read some of your work, I would be at a loss to explain why anyone would be rude to you. Terry.

Spot on with your observations.
Some members tend to try anything to make others look bad. Usually they end up only making themselves unimpressive.
Like your three points, they show what members who stoop to these levels really are.

I know what I like and I like the wonders of this author's witty work. This author is abile
to write about a reality that is
a sensitive but a real FS issue. Do
contest participants low rate the work's of others. Yes. In my world
it a people thing,not just a guy's. .Julcia

Hi Terry, you did a really good job writing this story and doing it with tastefully humor. Of special note:
Other times I have seen an entrant give a highly critical review calling into question another entry writer's integrity.
(It seems that contests can bring out the ugly in people. This is why I don't enter them, but when I do, I usually only enter site contests. When I read nasty exchanges, it puts my stomach in a knot--not much fun and not why I joined FS.)
Sadly, I agree with your observations. Well done. Keep the blue waters flowing. Margaret

Hi Terry, I do love how you use humor to get a point across.
Some of my favorite reviews are from people who have helped me considerably by constructive criticism and respectful feedback. When it's done in cruel and vindictive ways, it tends to make the mind completely lose the good that could come out of it, and hurt instead of help. Who can benefit from accusations made when you know that they were not truthful, that puts your brain in hurt mode, all you feel is the hurt and at that time you lose all ability to gain any of the helpful perspective that may have come from the review. All you can think of is the unfairness. (I know I just repeated myself, but because of some people like myself being more sensitive, it is important enough for me to do so)
I have learned much from invaluable feedback and hope that nobody ever holds back, but I do believe in the golden rules and since I try never to treat someone else disrespectfully, I believe I deserve that in return.
And for anyone who believes there are two sides to that story, are terribly misguided. It is never ok to be disrespectful to another, especially when the other side had not provoked such disregard of manners.
I found Gloria and Diane's comments extremely helpful, as they both learned by experience, and the last thing that I ever expected to have to do is search the internet to find out if my joke from my childhood is original. But I will make sure I do that for now on, so I am very appreciative for those comments.
However there is one thing that has me feeling a little gun shy. There have been a few occasions that I will use an original thought of my own, and within a week, someone else is using the same one. Although suspicious, it is not my place to accuse them of stealing from me because who's to say that we both didn't have the same thoughts. How do you research that?
So with that said, I go back to Gloria and Diane's suggestions which I will live by for now on. Always write in Author's notes where you came up with (especially joke) ideas, so hopefully that will save the temptation of someone writing unkind, unnecessary and untrue accusations.
Thank you Terry for writing this, as I am sure that there are many who will learn from it; especially to stay away from men's navels : )

Thank you, Debi. I think I am going to write another post, even though I am retired. It will be some original jokes I have written on my keyboard. It will even have what I hope will be a humorous suggestion for all those...navels! Terry.

One can take this commentary in stride. Reviewing a story should be constructive, as most are, at least on my end. People on this site have a voice, no matter how it's used. We cannot always appease the author every time and should realize to take criticism on this site with a grain of salt, like you, no one is perfect.

I will confess that I did not anticipate your ending. However, given the start of your narrative, perhaps I should have. I digress. Both your humor and unique style are eloquently expressed here. Thanks for the chuckle and the smile. Well done.

Now, it's the standard; why can't we all get along? But you're right; it's happened to me. I'd give somebody a six, and they'd give me a three. What a wonderfully written piece. Best of luck with your writing! I wish I had a six for you.
Have a great day, and God bless.

Terry, you do have a way of explaining things. While I haven't seen the rude behavior you described, I believe it does exist. This week I won my first sitewide contest. I was so excited! Within a few hours, I received a 4-star review on my winning poem (which in no longer promoted, by the way) telling me everything that was wrong with it. Seriously? Such a passive aggressive move to tell me in a backhanded way that he didn't think it was worthy of winning. To put it mildly, I was disheartened. I thought about writing a rant, but I thought that might be overdoing it. So, yea, those dicks are alive and well on FanStory. I'm so glad that you haven't 'totally' retired from writing.

Interesing commentary. I have to say I've not seen this done but nothing surprises me, so I'm sure it happens. If I read the entries of other people in the contest I alway look for what I like about the entry and comment on that. It's never occured to me that what I said might swing the contest for or against my entry. You second and third comment made me smile.
