I recall the same experience around 1949. I was three at the time and had to have my tonsils removed. I can still remember the terror of the mask and ether. Best of luck in the contest.

Thank you for sharing this interesting story. Children interpret things differently, and it is important that adults explain exactly what is going to happen. I had ether to have my tonsils out when I was a child and it was a very frightening experience.

Thank you Anne. I appreciate the review and comments on my story. I'm sure my mom might have explained, but I think she was as surprised as I was that would have to put me to sleep.

This is a delightful story about a little girl fearful of dying. You gave all the pertinent details to allow the reader to know how a young child would think. Would they put you down like a mad dog, or remove your thumb? Were they trying to kill you? You did a great job making your point. Best wishes in the contest.

I recall the days of ether and, luckily, never had to be sedated. It sounds as though it was a traumatizing time in your childhood. I'm happy you came through it okay. This is well-written and to the point. I enjoyed reading it. Best, JohnC

Thank you John. I doubt if a nurse, and probably one without a degree would be allowed to give anything to a child to put they to sleep these days. I'm glad you enjoyed my story.

Very nicely done.

Some fine tunes:

"You need to take a deep breath." she told me.

Also:

That day turned out to be good day after all.

I enjoyed this peek into your childhood!

You told your story well. I was right there with you, fighting the ether. It reminded me of the time when I was a little older than that, and the dentist had pulled a back tooth. I cried and cried because I thought I was going to look like the old ladies in the church with sunken jaws. ; ) good luck in the contest!

Playing or misuse of ether; a cute girl child at her 6 year old does like this for mostly by birth babies do and act like this and sometime even more furious life taking or risky act at frequent use of fingers, and cause harm to elders and members in the family; well done; ALCREATOR LITT DEAR

I'm still like that and I'm almost 50 and whenever I go to the doctor or dentist my blood pressure hits the roof. I can sympathize with the child, but I'm sure it's even more scary for a kid. It was a good story thanks for sharing.

Thank you Jack. Actually I'm still like that too. I don't like someone else controling my vital functions. I think they started putting something in a IV to calm us down but it doesn't help much.

It's a real-life account of a little girl's fear at the prospect of 'going under' for the purpose of having a medical procedure carried out- a convincing POV of the child
