Fully impacted image: "I felt sick as I watched the emergency vehicles leave together in red strobes of light." Bingo: "Sure enough, lying there on the bed was suspect #2 in my daughter's murder--the man seen leaving with Phoebe from the fall festival on All Hallows' Eve." You've used some good similes and metaphors. We'll be back.

Hi Sally,
Just wondering about "Gaston". You don't have him in the list of characters. But I know this is the creepy guy who was with Phoebe at the fair, and just discovered beaten up in Betty Jo's old barn. I looked the name up... "This was the name of a sixth-century bishop who was a missionary to the Franks, which led its use as an aristocratic name in the early Middle Ages. The name may also mean "man from Gascony", whereby Gascony is a region in the south of France whose inhabitants are reputed to be hot-tempered." Is this relevant?

Then there's another testy lad, white hair and beard, dressed in a robe, and again... not listed in the characters. Nurse Price identified him as a "warlock". How would she know that? And where would she have seen him before? She definitely remembered him from "somewhere". And she thinks Gaston must be a son or grandson.

Quite a scene in the parking lot with Nix flinging his sword about. But Patience would have no truck with him. She left him to the eagles.

"Come! Both of you... come!" She covered us with her wings, and graced us with indescribable heavenly gifts.
(I wonder what indescribable gifts were graced upon Tommy and Willa.)

My favorite lines,
"I felt sick as I watched the emergency vehicles leave together in red strobes of light."
and,
"Hank hurried over to the patrol car and leaned in, his warm breath expelling in white vapors against the cold."
and,
"Your flag's at half-mast, Detective Sams."

It will be interesting to discover what Gaston can tell them. Looking forward to that.

Nicely penned!
Hugs,
Kimbob

Dear Kim, thank you for the exceptional review and star blast. I am honored and blessed. I am half French as Dupree is one of my ancestral names. Gaston means son or grandson. A good clue jere as he will be tied into this case soon. The next chapter will blow your socks off. Stay tuned. Sending you my very best and blessings to you all. I hope everyone is feeling better.

I thought son (or grandson) was "garcon".
We are all feeling better after 2 weeks. But there's still a persistent cough. We're getting there, though, little by little. Thanks!

Same GarÁon and Gaston come from the same old German. It also means ghost.

This is interesting as a detective story, with the addition of these supernatural elements of demons and angels. The action adventure is crisp and there's plenty of tension throughout. You pull it pretty tight, especially in that scene between the warlock and the detective and the hospital orderly. I liked the real life segment best. I thought the dialogue was realistic and crisp, the motive of the detective trying to find the murderer of her daughter is clear, and the suspense is building. I realize I walked in on the middle of this, but the writing is nice and polished and there's plenty of action and tension here. estory

Keep your heart in place, Sally, and strike the evil in the land. Have Patience cover you with the wings of heaven and have love in your heart. It's getting better every time I read a chapter. Thank you for sharing.

There are elements of a cozy mystery here, Sally, along with the best elements of hardcore detective and thriller, all carefully blended through your skilled hands with spiritualistic fantasy. You do it all so well. I wish I'd held back a six for you, but you know how that goes.

Wow Sally! Great chapter! And now a warlock as well. Patience has her hands full. It is so nice to read about good triumphing over evil. The writing kept moving at a hasty, but not rushed, pace and I was gripped all the way through. I found a few typos noted below. Great job!

Sue

Sally,
This is a tremendous story.
I feel the power of the angel.
I was told a long time ago, (paraphrasing) that the battle between good and evil is not fought among flesh, but among spiritual principalities.
Your nicely story embodies this.
I like the way the pace quickens toward the end, during the spiritual battle.
Exceptional work, Sally.
Good luck with this one.
Blessings,
Cindy
