Hi Michael,
This sounds like using the dog's feelings as a metaphor for human feelings about someone wanting to be loved by someone like someone loves their first love. Living in the present and not in the past.
Keep writing and stay healthy

This cuts very deep, and is known to many. Agony of knowing that someone dear to you will never love you the way she loved another. And living with this realization every day. Alas, there is nothing stronger than first love, and it never dies.

Great imagery, visuals and presentation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

This work has reached the exceptional level

Having gone through a similar time when our beloved dog Molly passed on, our daughters coerced us to get get a new puppy. It hits home, because I began to compare this little one to my Molly. Thankfully, this didn't last long, and now she has become an integral part of our family. I will never forget or stop loving Molly, but I appreciate our new puppy Charlie, for who she is.

Thank you so much for your kind and generous review! I'd like to think that Daisy is not as emotionally starved as her poem suggests, though she does have to put up with Harry's photos on the wall. I believe your thoughts on this subject are very similar to mine.

This is a very emotional poem and it made me feel so sorry for the current pet being ignored. Truly it's probably not the case, but it's how she feels.... how sad. Thank you for sharing.

My thanks for your kind and thoughtful review. I'd like to think that what you suspect is true, in as much as Daisy receives more love than her poem suggests!

A man's best friend doing what comes naturally, offering his owner unconditional love. This is an endearing verse, well written with great rhyming and flow.

A sad poem with an elegaic feel. The use of questioning is very effective as it seems to be both self-questioning and questioning of a partner. The regular meter and rhyme give a sense of entrapment, the impossibility of moving on.

What a heartbreaker, Michael.
I can feel the pain pouring off the poem. I can also say... been there, done that... a lot!
In the words of the immortals...
"He loves her, she loves him, he loves somebody else, you just can't win."
This thing they call love is a messy thing for sure. Sounds to me like the two in the poem are both settling. The one because he can't have what he really wants, the other because he really wants what's in front of him but it's being withheld. Just so sad.
I wish them both luck.
Susan :)

Since I don't know the first thing about poetry, I read very little. But whenever I'm about to post a story outside my comfort zone, I turn to reading poetry for inspiration. And wow, this one really hits home. Thanks for sharing.

My thanks for your kind and thoughtful review. I must admit to not being a great reader of poetry, but I do like to inflict it on others! All the best from MIchael.

This is a beautiful, sad poem, Michael. You would never know it was about a dog's first love without the picture and the beginning blurb, as it could apply equally well to a woman's first love. Very well done with great rhyming and an interesting, consistent meter.
