Nice concept.
Pondering your title, I wondered whether you meant the back-and-forth of battle, or the action and result ( I shoot, you die).
It's me, I know, but I don't see the yin and yang of your 9th stanza. Leaders start wars based on lies that the military fights. (???)
As a counterpoint, some wars are just - Ukraine defending herself.
"A war thier lies had first begun." - (their)
Best wishes.

I'm sorry for what war has put you through and how it has destroyed so many lives. It never seems to end, the losses so devastating that its a wonder we ever recover as a nation. I appreciate you sharing with us.

Thank you for sharing this poem with us. I enjoyed reading. You did a wonderful job describing the pain and horrors of war. I graduated from high school in 1972. Some of my friends who were a little older went. Nothing good ever comes from war.

Your awesome post begs a question. Can a country that self identifies as Christian, engage so often in warfare when Christian principles command us to love our enemies and to allow God to repay insults and injuries. We sacrifice our young in much the same way that past pagan nations in bible times would sacrifice their young. I have so many questions. We allowed so many American youth to die in Vietnam and then we just walked away, and now on friendly terms with the people and that nation.

Well, a well-versed Army Chaplin would answer you by saying: "Man often kills what he loves so feel free to love your target as you destroy it." That and other contradictions is why I stay clear of absolutists' faiths, there are just too damn many to choose from. Metaphysics dependent belief systems are just that... Metaphysical and not of the 'factual' plane of discourse. Thanks friend. easy

a powerful and moving poem about the suicide of an old army buddy. Sadly, that is too common an occurrence nowadays.

I have a blog, "the world according to cosmos" (https://theworldaccordingtocosmos.com" and a podcast on Spotify and elsewhere, and would love to feature your work as a guest poet. I have made this offer to others on Fan Story and Writing Com whose work I admire. If interested, send me five poems, a bio, photos, links to social media, etc. Once I post it I will send you a link so you share it. I have about 5,000 followers now. Send anything to authorjakecosmosaller@gmail.com. It takes up to a week to post it, once I do so I will send you a link so you can forward it to your friends.

Sadly, war is a money machine and hence, will never be a thing of the past. I thank you tho, for being one of the brave. And love the cadence and rhyme you used with this post. Merry Christmas to you!!

Thank you for sharing your feelings in this poem. Also, thank you for being a soldier when called upon.
Notes: "A war thier lies had first begun. (letters transposed in "their" in the second to last stanza).

Hey Tom,
I hope that yin and yang and harmonize to cause peace so no one else has to go to war and watch friends get hurt of killed. We loose so many too young to war. Even some that come back are never whole again. That is why some commit suicide.
Thanks for your service.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Happy Holidays.
Joan

This work has reached the exceptional level

This definiotely should have been a contest entry. You called attention to a very important issue-veteran suicide. You made it rhyme and make sense and touched this readers emotions. Very nice job.

If the War kills you - no matter if you were in the country or home ten years later - your name does belong on the wall. It kills some who served there slower than others, but it kills them just the same.

Never having served, I won't pretend to understand all of this; yet I do understand the horrors of war and I wish those who begin them would be the first to take part in them. I think we would see less fighting and more finding solutions.

I'm glad you're back as you seem to have important things to say and a gift for saying them.
