I think we have much more in common than what I was going to ask you about. And that was about a grandmas love. I know how much you are enjoying being a grandma as Heather has shared that w me. My grandbabes are my life, but growing up too fast. But now I see we share more similarities as I too have a brother that I have only met a few times but mine is half and yours is whole. And of course yours is so tragic. I am sorry for how rough that had to be. Did you write about this once before as it seems so familiar? Either way I am so happy you have found each other now without other siblings anymore. But when you say in your poem how you say You love each other frequently, Rog and I do too? Mine is from Ariz. where is your brother? Your poem is lovely Sharon and this is not the one I planned to read, I couldn't help but be intrigued. I'll get back to the other one next time. God bless and I pray your brother and you get together soon. Beautiful story in a poem!

Thank you so much for this thoughtful review. My brother James was born and raised in England and still lives there with his wife, In Crowbough, Sussex. We have face timed with each other, but mostly text each other daily. I was blown away by how much he looked like our dad, the first time I saw him. I remember when I was young, always wishing I had grandparents, but being told they had died during the War. The truth, I found out later, was that my grandmother was alive until I was about the age of 8. I will never understand any of it. Still, life goes on, regardless. Thanks so much for reading my story.

Hello Boogienights. I think I reviewed you before. If I'm wrong, please forgive me. I'm happy to be doing so now.
How could I resist this piece - I was born in 1945, a time of the 'boomers', when celebrations at the end of World War II, led to a massive surge in adoptions of unplanned babies - I believe I read it was 16% in the UK for the 'boom' years.
Technically, written in quatrains, rhythm is iambic tetrameter, rhyming couplets aabb. Most of the verses are spot on - a bit lumpy in places, but all editing is up to you.
It tells a poignant and complicated story, of concealment and unhappiness - in many ways, this is a real tragedy, which might have had no light at all at the end of the tunnel.
You have constructed this long poem well, not revealing the outcome at all until half way - and then it comes as a surprise. But the last four verses fill us with hope: in spite of all the pain, you now find comfort in each other - and may that 'best surprise' never diminish for the rest of both your days.
Thank you for this remarkable story.
Paul

I find some of your syntax a little twisted in order to reach the rhyme but this is a heartfelt and personal poem that sums up your strong bond of family and love. I can see why you win so many contests! Well done on this!

Oh, how beautifully you have written about this event in your life, and the fullness of both its sorrow and its joy in finding each other. A most remarkable gift. Thank you for using your gift as a writer to share this story.

Precious picture of him, also of you.
Now I have a question, which is absolutely none of my business, but I am moved by your story and curious. Now that he's found you, why aren't you two planning some kind of get together? Meet in the middle? Something?

Thanks for reading my poem. We both really want to meet, but we both have health issues and England is so far away. I don't think he'd want to take a plane here and I can't afford to go there...although, he insists that we'll meet someday. Here's hoping. :)

well, meeting in the middle certainly wouldn't work.
I hope you do meet someday. Good luck!

Like you, I don't understand how a parent can give away a child, I know I certainly couldn't have possibly given up my girls, and if anything happened to my children, we would adopt our grands in an eye blink, beautifully and emotively written dear fiend, blessings Roy

What a wonderful surprise and shock that must have been for you. I totally understand the conflicted feelings and feelings of lost time! I hope that some day you get to meet.

You have told quite a compelling story in smooth flowing and detailed rhymes. To meet another sibling as an adult must be shocking. It's a shame Carol and Robbie never got to meet James.

There are so many reasons why he may have been left behind. Another writer on this site wrote a devastating story about why he had been left behind as a child.

I'm glad you now have James, and I'm glad you shared this beautiful Christmas story with us. Best wishes in the contest.

Hello Boogie:
Age can be a factor here you may want to consider that. Were your parent's married yet? I only ask, because like you, I have a brother who found us years later.
Unlike you, we found out about his existence when I was a teenager. At least my eldest sister did. It made its way through the rest of us kids after that over the years... the trickle-down theory. I'm sure my dad knew when my older sister found out if he didn't know earlier.
My brother is actually googleable and has had a movie made about him (Rainbow Warrior) and has a couple of books out about his adventures. He works for Greenpeace and has been kidnapped, along with his crew, by Putin. There have been some harrowing times since we met! His name is Peter Willcox.
He was adopted and actually grew up in the next state, in the town next to the one where my brother ended up getting a teaching job and starting his family... before we met. How's that for crazy? So, his kids and Peter's kids have gotten to spend more time together growing up, as they spent time with their grandparents in the states during their high school years. (Mom lives in Mallorca. She was a doctor on the ship.)
Enough about all that.
It's very cool that you and your brother found each other after all this time. :)
Magic does happen. :)
Susan :)

Hi Sharon,
This is a well told rhyming story. It is a happy story of a good meeting. It is good to meet a new family memory. Sometimes it is hard to understand why children are left behind. Often it is because there is just not enough money to take care of that child. I hope you and your brother become very close.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Good luck in the contest.
Happy Holidays
