Hello Heather, this is a very
stirring humanitarian poem.
It's compelling and it takes
the reader into a harrowing
event story. Thank you for
penning this sad story to
make more readers aware.
Many blessings to you.

This sounds like a terrifying experience of maybe a refugee? Losing everything in life, including family, must be so devastating, but often these people survive and make the most of life, a poignant and also chilling write, touching us deep within, love Dolly x

This is a heartbreaking story playing out every day. I personally can't imagine being so desperate that I would give myself and my money into the hands of these people.

Beautifully written and emotionally told.

Hope you are well.

Pam

I am, thanks. How about you?
I know lots of Nigerians who've gone through similar experiences to secure a better future. One of my best friends crossed the desert where somebody stabbed him and stole all his money. Then he crossed the sea to get to Spain on a raft. Luckily, now he has a stable job, is happily married and has three kids.
    Thanks for reading.

It's heartbreaking that these people hire coyotes to bring them into the US illegally. They spend their entire savings to hire them. But there are legal means to come and work in the country and both our governments are negligent to not provide a way. Great way to write the poem through the child's eyes. So many died in the process of crossing the border!

I know and it's so sad... The same thing happens in Europe. I was just telling Pam Lonsdale that one of my best friends came to Spain in a raft.
My husband always says there should be no borders. But that would be an ideal world, not the one we live in.

Oh yes people smuggling, we have it here, but they come in leaky boats, because we are an island nation. I feel so much for the kids, but they do it for a better life, to escape poverty and tyranny. This is so beautifully written Maria, love this, well done, blessings Roy

They also come in rafts here to Spain, most of them from Africa (including one of my friends) and as you say they do it to secure a better life for their children and for themselves.
    Thanks for reading.

This poem, Crossing Borders, gives voice to one of the thousands of children who may have gone through this deadly crossing only to end up homeless, orphaned, and, unfortunately, rife for exploitation.

You did a really good job with this poem about crossing borders. You used very good descriptive words that made me feel like I was suffocating as I read some of your words. That must be how they feel when they are in those trucks heading to safety, they are hoping, but many end up dead. Thank you for sharing. love and blessings, Teri
