This movie is very weird. Of course it is told from a child's point of view. It was well written. The audience could experience the scene viscerally or may even have identified with Ralphie. Though I could have a bb gun, my brother couldn't, not because my mother was afraid he'd shoot his eye out, but that he might shoot someone elses eye out. He had a lot of anger with temper tantrums. He is very gentle today.

Lol, so glad he's different now. Not laughing at you Liz, but the way you said it was so darn cute! Yes that movie is different, but has been playing in our house every Christmas Eve, all evening, ever since I remember when my kids were little. And now at their houses when we go, the tradition lives on.
Thanks for your fun comments and review. You my friend are a hoot. More people should be like you and the world would be a better place to live.
God bless you my dear fr!.

Oh Debi, this is just too funny. I loved your 5-7-5 poem and it fitted so well with the video, which was a hoot. I loved it. All the best in the contest. Ulla:)))

Oh Ulla, thank you so much. You are so incredibly sweet. I suppose you haven't seen this movie yet? If you ever have a chance to see it, you would love it. I think it is supposed to take place in the 30s or 40s. It is truly cute.
Thank you so much for your lovely words for this poem. Debi

I like that your 5-7-5 poem rhymes, and it really tells the story in only a very few words. I can just hear the adults confronting Ralphie about wanting the BB Gun. Best wishes in the contest. Carol

Oh Carol, you are so much fun. Thank you for the greatest review. You have no idea how much your kind words mean, since there have been some who had problems with my choice of humor because of the BB gun. Thank you so much my sweet friend

BAM! And Debi hits the holiday spirit right on the head! This is a fun 5-7-5. I always loved Ralphie and his run for the Red Ryder B-B Gun! (Even if he did shoot his eye out!) lol
Gotta' love those Christmas Classics!
Great fun, good luck in the contest!
Susan :)

Obviously, they didn't grow up in the freedom of the 60s and the 70s, when we all got to have lives as children... and shoot each other's eyes out! (those were the days!) LOL

I like your poem. Ralphie must take the scout's oath, thus: 'On my honor I promise that-- I will do my duty to God and the King. I will do my best to help others, whatever it costs me. I know the scout law and will obey it.'

Rosemary I love that. I was never a scout but I have heard that before. And yes, with those kind of rules that are made to be followed, guns do not hurt or kill, its the ones who don't have respect for the rules, that make it hard for the others. That was really cool to hear again. Thank you . And thank you for the lovely review and comments. I truly appreciate it and thank you again, my dear friend.

I relate as a proud BB gun owner of decades. My three daughters were not interested in taking up the watch, but grandsons carried on the tradition. Oh yes, the doubters spoke, but I told their grandmother to go in the house. Merry Christmas

Y'know Reese, in any day and age, it is my feeling that the guns that kill, are the ones that were never given to their kid at a young age, and the kid that didn't have an adult to show them respect for it and introduce them so when a bigger gun was needed for hunting, they knew how to be responsible with them. That has been the way of life since way back when. Good for you for teaching your grandsons. We have four grandsons and two grandgirls and they all had a BB gun. My oldest granddaughter has gotten three deer and is only 19. I am proud we carried on this tradition. If someone says fish or hunt, they can't move fast enough. This is called crime prevention.
I love your comment about sending grandma back in the house. Kudos for you my friend and thank you for the awesome review and comments.

This is a delightful and well-written 5-7-5 poem using the one line that truly makes this movie memorable.
I admit I sent away for a decoder ring and to my disappointment, it told me to drink Ovaltine!
Best wishes,
Mary

Sorry Mary, but that is hilarious because that is what Ralphie got from them too. I don't know if I was too young to hear that on the radio or if I just couldn't hear it with nine people in our family making so much noise. Anyway, I love you sharing that with me. I never knew anyone who got one, so that is really cool..... Thanks for the fun review for my poem and for having a little fun with me, my sweet friend.

I think the TV show was Captain Midnight that got kids to get a decoder ring, and like Ralphie,I went into the bathroom to decode.

This is a good short review of this movie. I think all mothers would fear this worst possibility of using a bb-gun. I never liked this movie because I have bad memories of watching stunned or dead birds falling out of trees from a boy on my block shooting them with his bb-gun.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Happy Holidays

Thanks so much Joan. Now I have had people write in and complain about the poem a little because of the gun theme, but it is a movie about a BB gun, not a war movie. Lol. However you have the most valid comment that I have heard. When we were all given a BB gun when we became seven years old, with strict rules that if you didn't obey, then it was taken away for a month. And we knew they would do it. But one of our rules was not to kill birds or anything unless we were asked to get rid of a snake or something like that. People who have complained have brought up about it being so horrible because guns kill. Well in our area, with 0 crime, and every child in out county maybe started with BB guns, loving parents who taught respect and responsibility were ready for the bigger gun when ready to go hunting. It is the guns that were never given to a child and taught that are the ones that kill people. Because in Minneapolis there are kids with no fathers and run the streets, buy guns with drug money and kill to get more. Not the ones in our rural area. But I agree with you if kids are doing that, they should have it taken away. Yet this movie was just in fun and so was my poem. So I shouldn't let the nay sayers get to me, because it really was meant in innocence. ...... i thank you for your sweet and fun review and comments. And you just made me remember something. One day my dad found a dead bird behind the garage and my little brother lost his gun for a month, plus was grounded the whole time from his friends to come over. Yep, rules at our house were meant to be followed. Lol

You're welcome. I don't think anyone in our family, either on my dad's or mom's side ever owned a gun. I am anti guns for my family but not in general. I would like sane gun control laws.
