Hi Eliz - What a wonderful, powerful letter! There are so many families who do not have the basics to care for young children. It tears at my heart. I am reminded of an event many years ago. I was a Head Start teacher and did home visits in northeast Missouri. There were two girls, twins. They were probably 4 years old. The house was heated by a wood stove. The stove was pitted with holes. You could see the fire inside the stove. I looked at the bathroom. The toilet was stopped-up with toilet paper and waste. It truly saddened me. It will always remain in my memory.

I worked with the poor in Washington, DC, and NYC. Let me preach for a minute, in our wealthy country, how could there be such poverty? Thank you so much for the many stars.

Hi Eliz - I totally agree with you. The weather is brutally cold here - below 0 at night. There is a large homeless encampment in Spokane. My heart goes out to those who live in tents or less. I wish I had the answers but I don't. I also hear stories of vets living in tents in the national forest. We live in a very modest but comfortable mobile home. We are warm and comfortable. I'm so thankful for our blessings.

Hi Eliz - I just reread "Christmas Letter." The section about Auntie Ann reminded me so much of my Aunt Edie. She was living in a assisted living center near Seattle. She eventually needed more care so I moved her to a nursing home about two miles away from where I lived. She continued to deteriorate. She turned 100 shortly before Christmas. I gave her 100 roses for her birthday. She passed on about a month or so later. I think that her one goal was to live to be 100 and she succeeded!

I know this is fiction, but I found the letters interesting and well-written. I will say that they are believable. Christmas is the time of year family situations sometimes bubble up to the top, and need immediate support.

Good luck in the contest. This was a feel good two Christmas story, since I gather one part was about an earlier Christmas and the other was about a more recent one. I enjoyed reading it, but did feel like it could use a little more depth and some transition from one situation to the next. lt was a bit confusing with one letter being torn off and put away...not sent and the other being sent out. I thought it was supposed to show how things had gotten better, but wasn't sure...some indication if that was your intention would have helped.
