I love the pic ...watching the outdoor wildlife feed is always entertaining from our point of view.
..for mammals it is about survival especially with the cold weather on its way. You mentioned that the squirrels live in your old maple tree so they consider your property their territory.
So most probably they see the other critters like the chipmunks and the solitary rabbit as intruders.
Squirrels gain extra weigh during the harvest season. They are also omnivores so during the winter months they miss out on lizards, insects,small snakes, nestlings, eggs etc.
I would love to watch all those critter feeding !

Thanks for the read and the feedback. I watch every morning. It is so interesting the way various animals interact. It is only the squirrels who seem to be aggressive when it comes to sharing the meal. The birds and the others just seem to co-exist and pay little attention to anyone else.

Oh I love this, so pleasant except for the squirrel. Oh so true. I hung a great bird feeder up high outside my window and they have not found a way to get at it
